Passport

Over a year later and I still haven't changed my name on my passport! Who has and hasn't gotten a new passport due to a name change? Does the process take a long time?

I sent in my new pictures and my marriage license, with the paperwork, and I got it back in two weeks. My parents sent out for their first passports, and also got them back in two weeks...but it might depend on the time of year?

i did NOT change my name on my passport, and i don't intend to until it expires.  i just got it like 2 years ago, so it doesnt expire for a while, and i can't see spending the $100 or so to change it.

it seems, though, that as long as you travel in your maiden name when you have to use your passport, you don't actually HAVE to change your name on it.  i found this out when i went to change my social security card.  the agent at the SSA office told me that she never changed her passport, because as long as you make your plane reservations in the name on your passport (so your maiden name) no one cares.

i havent traveled out of the country since i changed my name, but i can tell you that it works with domestic travel!  my SS card has my married name, but my license still has my maiden name (for now...i'm lazy lol).  i made my airline reservation in my maiden name and gave them my license at the desk...it all worked out perfectly!

I haven't changed my name on the passport yet.  It doesn't expire for another 8 years, and I didn't want to pay again for it, so I'm waiting for it to expire.

I will be booking with things with my maiden name.

Ditto Vikki!  I'm not bothering to change it - too much of a hassle.  I'm just going to keep my maiden name legally for a while.

FWIW, if you do decide to change your name on your passport, you get a new expiration date expiring 10 years from the month you apply.

I changed my name legally and changed my name on my passport.  I sent in my new pictures, a copy of our marriage license and my old passport and it took a few weeks.  No big deal!
