Marriage License questions

Hi Ladies .. I posted this on the Indiana local boards, but there doesn't seem to be as much activity there as their is here! And anyway .. it's kind of a question that applies regardless of which state you live in ... anyway:
I'm working on filling out our marriage license info online so it'll (hopefully) go quicker when we need to go to the courthouse. Our living situation is kind of confusing right now and I'm not really sure what addresses to put on the license. FI is living in the house we'll live in after we're married but hasn't gotten his DL changed yet (It's in the same town as the address on his license, which is also in the county we are getting married). I'm temporarily living in an apartment in the meantime ... and my DL still has my Michigan address on it! (I just finished up school in IN when we got engaged and found a job here, but was waiting until I changed my name to change my residency)
So I guess my question is ... should the address on the application match our IDs or where we actually live?

Re: Marriage License questions

  • Match your IDs.  We changed our address (well switched apartments) and mentioned that to the lady at the town hall and she could care less.  She just wanted the address that was actually on file for the state on our IDs.  You can switch all of that afterwards.
  • Match your IDs.  They will check your IDs to confirm you are who you say you are and verify your address.  We are closing on a house this week but won't have our new DL in time to go to the courthouse when we are in VA next week so we are using the address we are at now.  When you request a copy (you'll need for SSA and DMV to change your name) I believe you can put a different address.

Also, you can call the courthouse to check.  I know the VA courthouses have email help and they were very prompt with their reply.
  • Just make sure they don't mail the license to one of the addresses listed on your ID's!

We did have to put current address, so we put our legal address as it is on our ID's (we're in a similar situation).  Well, actually, FI has an old address on his drivers' license, but we put the house where we lived and where we maintain residency, even though we're not currently living there.  We did have to tell them where to mail the marriage license, though, which is where we're actually living - it's not our legal residence and it's not on either ID, but they definitely took it to make sure we get the proper documentation after the wedding!

  • Im in Ohio and your address does not matter. Neither of our IDs matched the address listed on the license application. I think it is more about confiriming identity as opposed to confiriming address' . I dont think they expect you to have your exact address. I am not chaging my DL until I change my name....end result we have our license !! :)

  • Thanks ladies! I'm glad you mentined an address for them to send it to ... we have PO boxes instead of mailboxes where we live, so we'd never get it with the addresses listed :)
  • Our state didn't even ask to see our IDs. So...in that case I'd just put whatever your new address will be. The request for a certified copy is actually something they want you to mail in "a week or so" after the officiant has returned the signed certificate. There's just a place there to put the mailing address you want the copy to go to, so it could be work, temporary address, the White House, the Moon...

Probably not helpful. Oregon is clearly different from a lot of states. ;)
