Photography question

My wedding is in Waukesha next May. We have pretty much everything figured out already (we're planners!) except the DJ and photographer. I don't know a thing about wedding photos, and I was put in charge of getting prices. I know that photographers do packages, but what does that mean? Do they sometimes only take pictures at the ceremony and not the reception? I would love to hear some examples of what you ladies had. I don't need to know what you paid, but when I go to these photographers, I want to know what to ask for to suit our needs. Whatever those may be... Thanks!

Many photographers do packages.  They typically include a set number of hours to take photos, an album or cd option, editing/airbrushing, and sometimes an engagement session.

We used http://adamtphotography.com/ I found his prices to be very reasonable for the quality of photos.  He was also flexible about the package.  If you didn't need an option he would take some off the cost.

Every good Photog has "packages". They will offer x amount of hours and with that package you will get x amount of pictures, coffee table books ext. The more expensive package you get them more you will get basically. We finaggled a biot with our photographer and got an amazing deal (which he does not do easily). Our package includes 8 hours of Photog time, 500 raw negative rights, a coffee table book, and 2 large photos. We paid $1,700. here is the link to our Photographer. He is amazing. Check out his blog as well.

Had I found oput that my friend Brenda does Photography as well for nearly half the price with rights to all edited negatives, I would have gone with her. She is truly amazing. http://www.brendakayphotography.com/

One big thing you will want to look for is rights to your photos. This is HUGE. It means when all is said and done YOU own the negatives to the photos and can print them at your pleasure. Many will give you rights, but at a cost and you need to check whether they offer the negatives as raw photos or edited (edited is better obviously).

Almost every photographer is going to show you there best work. Beware of those who just want to meet you in a public place with only a book to see. You will want to go TO their studio, this is where all the goods are kept and you can get a better idea of their style.

Good Luck, hope some of this info helps! Make sure you take your time, and do your research, and stalk those Photog websites!

First you need to decide what style of photography you are looking for-more posed photos or photojournalism.

Most photog packages usually include a certain number of hours of work and extras such as an album, photo's on disc, copyright release (you want this!!), prints.  Again, you need to decide what you want.  Do you want pics of just the ceremony, ceremony and reception, getting ready, on-location pics between ceremony and reception?  Do you want an album that the photog puts together or do you want to do your own album?

These are really good points.  The rights to the photos have been fabulous to have.

You do want to see a wide variety of work.  Our photographer met us at coffee shop, but brought a wide sample of work (books from 4 other weddings).

If your looking for a fantastic option... I would check out Light Source Photography.  The photographer is Cathleen Warren.  We booked her for our wedding in May also.  So as long as your not getting married the same day as me She would be great!   She has packages but offers pricing on an individual basis.  She really works with you to make your photography dreams come true.

    Check her out!

I'm using Dean's Photography (http://deansphoto.biz/) and I think he has pretty reasonable rates for what you get. Our package includes engagement photos, rights to print the photos, and shooting the whole wedding and reception (including getting ready).

Owning the rights to your pictures is very important....if you have to purchase them all from the photographer, you are talking about a lot of money.

I had mine printed off on my own photo printer and put them into a frame.
