NWR - hot yoga

So I'm thinking of trying hot yoga on Sunday at my gym. I know the basics of yoga but not much else... supposedly this is a beginner class. What do I wear? What should I expect? TIA!

  • I love hot yoga.  Wear 'wicking' clothing.  I like to wear cropped pants because I don't like my legs out.  Wear a tank top because you will be sweating in places you didn't know could sweat.  No shoes or socks.  Hair up and off your neck.  Bring a towel for your mat and a towel to wipe your face and neck.  One bottle of water is more than enough for me.

Don't be intimidated.  It's easier poses because of the heat, and the heat offers you more flexibility.  I actually really enjoy it.  Good luck and have fun!
  • Is it Bikram??That is really hot--115 degrees..I take Vinyasa flow---its generally 89 degrees..flowing sun salutations, standing or balance poses, and stretching poses at the end.  Great workout!  Take childs pose if you need a rest..Bikram is generally more strict about when you can drink, rest, even use the bathroom!  Not a fan..Have fun!

  • Yes!! Vinyasa Flow. Thanks to you both for the suggestions. I'm excited!

  • I've never done it before, but a bunch of girls on the nest health & fitness board have given some great advice for others!

  • At the studio I go to, the weekday hot yoga classes are not as hot as the weekend classes.  I started with those then worked my way up to the weekends.  Its a great workout.

Like PP said, bring a towel and water and wear light clothing.

Have fun but remember if you feel like you can't do something, don't do it.  Your body will tell you!

<div>This!  I always wear yoga shorts because it gets so hot, and either just a sports bra or a tank over.  A towel for your mat is clutch- you won't believe how much sweat will drip off of you.  A regular bath towel or beach towel is just fine to start out with.  Don't wear any eye makeup.  The few times I had mascara on, it melted off my face and stuck to my contacts- not comfy!  </div><div>
</div><div>Also, if you have a long drive home after the gym, bring a change of underwear and pants so you're not sitting in the car with a wet bottom.  A close drive is manageable, but not great to be going a distance.

<div>I love hot yoga as well.  I just got back into yoga at the beginning of this year, and it feels great.  I've had 2 knee surgeries, so it's been difficult for me to run like I used to.  This has totally helped get me into wedding shape.  The heat in the room definitely helps flow more into the poses.  I go to a studio that is just hot yoga, so I'm not sure what types of ammenities your gym offers.  At my studio I need to bring my own mat (or you can rent one), towel, water, everything.  Does your gym provide mats and/or towels for you?  </div></div></div>

  • Hot yoga is amazing and will change your life - I love it, however it is not easy...

    1. You will be surprised at the amount you sweat.  It is disgusting.  Head to toe, your ears, hands, ankles, everywhere.  Sometimes this is mentally difficult for people to deal with.  You are going to be in poses wear the sweat is literally pouring off of your head on to your mat.  You need to become one with your sweat and pay no regard to this.
    2. Yoga is about concentration, clearing your mind, and not focusing on anything else.  Let go during class.  Focus on you and what you are doing - not what you can't do.  You many not get into the poses as deeply or as easily as others...remember, some of them have been doing it for a long time.
    3. It may take you years to master some poses, but everyone's body is different. ;)
    4. Do not wear any make-up.
    5. Wear a tiny light tank and your hair up.
    6. Hot yoga smells sometimes.  I go to a studio where it is strictly just hot yoga all of the time.  People sweat, they drip on the floor - you are going to sweat, and you are going to drip on the floor sometimes.  Your mat, towels, and your yoga clothes will pick up a certain scent after a while - you get used to it.
    7. You will by far look worse at the end of your class than you ever thought possible.  But guess what - everyone will look the same.  ;)
    8.  Set up in the back of the room.  If you do not know how to get in to poses, just peak at the first row - they are all usually avid yogis.
    9. You will become addicted.  I have never seen my body change as quickly then it has with yoga, and I've been doing it for over a year now.
    10. Enjoy, and remember, mind over matter.  Listen to your body.  :)
