To gift or not to gift?

My fiance and I are attending our friend's cocktail reception and I'm wondering about gift giving ettiquette.

The couple has asked my fiance to MC their wedding, so he has been planning for that for six months.  About two weeks ago they contacted him to make a video.  He has since put in over 20 hours making a professional video.

Do we still need to purchase them a gift?  Or are we covered?

Re: To gift or not to gift?

  • Was there any discussion of payment for either service?  If not, that does need to be discussed, even if it is your FI clarifying that this is his wedding gift to them.

Our cake was made by a family friend.  I had contacted her about making it, and when I asked for an estimate of how much her prices ran she said the decorating, baking, delivery & setup would be my wedding gift, I'd only be paying for the ingredients.
  • If your FI is offering his services free of charge, I wouldn't feel obligated to bring a gift .
