Cake consults/ tasting

My FI and I had a cake tasting last night at Sweet Art Bakery and the choices were to die for. My FI even picked out a grooms cake. I didn't even know he wanted one. Anyway he fell in love with the cake he wants and I love the chocolate cake with peanut butter mousse filling.
I originally planned on doing around 3 tastings but I'm really considering stopping right here at this one. It's a little more than I want to spend but my FI is so excited about it and he's paying for most of the wedding and doesn't seem to care about the price. I also thinbk they will be hard to beat as far as taste.  My question is how many cake tastings did you ladies have before you made a decision?

Re: Cake consults/ tasting

  • Aw, I really wanted to try Sweet Art, and we just couldn't schedule a time to go in!

We did three tastings.  I picked my favorite, but I'd gone alone and just brought samples home to H, and he didn't like them.  At that point I thought he was just being picky, so I threw up my hands and told him cake was his job.  Then he went in to my favorite place and loved it.  =)

  • I think if I do go to anymore I will go alone as well. I'm surprised he was able to go last night.

  • We did two, but were planning for three. Once we did our second tasting, we stopped as we knew we wanted to use her.
  • We are actually using a friend who bakes out of her home. We've had her stuff a few times at baby showers and random parties and we LOVE it.
She is still going to do a tasting for us to make it fun so we can pick flavors and stuff. It will probably just turn into a dinner night at their house where all 4 of us take samples, but it will be fun either way!
The great thing is that since she's invited to the wedding there's no delivery fee. :)
  • I initially was only going to do one.  Maggiano's was paying for all of the cake; however, the vendor bad mouthed Maggiano's to me and I told my contact.  I had to go in to Dallas Affaires.  I say had, but I was more than happy to.  The first cake was so dry and tasteless and my dad was not happy when we brought home the samples.  DA was so much better, but also more expensive.  Maggiano's said that they would pay the first $400ish and we paid the other part.  It was a bit more expensive but I did have fresh flowers on my cake.  It was delicious and beautiful!!!!

We did 3, but really only 2 that we had planned. The first one was the sister of our caterer. I wasn't able to do any research on her (since she's a one-man show) and it turned out that her prices were way over what we were willing to spend. (We did that tasting right after our catering tasting. Talk about food overload.) The cakes were delicous though so that wasn't a waste of time. :)

We then did Tabitha Ballard and my favorite hometown bakery, Bluebonnet. If I was rich I would have gone with Bluebonnet (to die for). They weren't that much more but we figured Tabitha was worth the savings since I knew the cake would still be delish and beautiful. Bluebonnet did irritate me a little because we weren't even able to meet with the person who would be making our cake (the owner) so we weren't able to get a lot of questions on design options answered. Soo yep.

  • We did what Kylie did--stopped at our second even though we had a third one scheduled.  We just didn't think we'd find one we liked better.

I say if you like it, just go for it.

  • I had 1 tasting at opulent cakes and booked right then I couldn't resist!

My FI wanted to book right away too.

  • We did 2 tastings...but as soon as we tasted the cake at Sugar Bee Sweets in Arlington we were ready to book.
  • I think I'm going to call this one good and book Sarah at Sweet Art Bakery. I just can't justify wasting my time or anyone elses when I really love this cake and so does FI.
