Wedding Music

I know there is a forum for music, but I'm searching specifically for pre ceremony music so I thought you brilliant ladies would have some ideas.  My FI and I are various ethnicities and I am trying to represent both our families as much as possible, i.e, Celtic music for the Irish side, the prayer for the Italian side.  My pickle is my polish side.  I am a quarter polish (the rest pretty much Irish), and I would like to have one song sung in polish before the actual ceremony.  Do any of you ladies have any ideas?  Even though I grew up in a Polish church, the Polish songs were only song before or after church during the holidays, and those don't really work for wedding music, specifically the around the manger song.

Thanks so much ladies.

By the way, what music did or will you ladies be having during your ceremony and played at church before the ceremony?

Re: Wedding Music

  • Just my opinion, but I would save the ethnic songs for background music during your reception.

DH & I chose hymns that we liked, and had them played on the piano/no vocals.

    O God Beyond All Praising
Lo How A Rose E'er Blooming
Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing
    How Great Thou Art
  • I don't recall exactly what we had for our prelude music, but I know it was all instrumental/organ music, nothing was sung.  I know we had a few Bach pieces, just not sure which ones.

During the Nuptial Mass, we had:

    Processional - Largo from Xerxes

Bride's Procession - Prelude to Te Deum

    Offertory Hymn - The Summons

Communion Hymn - O Father All Creating

Recessional - Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring

  • Could you choose music by a Polish composer?  I would think your music director or musicians could help you with that, and you might have more luck finding instrumental music rather than sung.

  • Kristan,

At many weddings I've played, I've used "How Beautiful"  for a procession....for both the bridal party-- then use the key change for the bride. It's awesome because its one long procession, rather than choppy with dead space and idle time...doesn't break the momentum.
  • We are estimating that we need 30 minutes worth of music to be played before the wedding starts, so we are trying to add in a few personal songs to that mix.  I don't think having a song just written by a Polish composer would work, cause nobody would really recognize it that clearly.  As of right now our plan is to have violen and/or flute trio and we have at least one soloist.  I may have a family friend do the lower register for The Prayer, since it sounds best with two people.  My FI prefers the Ave Maria sung by a soprano, and we are having that while we do the roses at Mary.

We used this for my entrance after "Our God is Here" by Chris Muglia for the bridal party.  I loved it! :) Also, it's nice to have another contemporary music user around here!  Sometimes, I feel like a crazy outlier!

<div>I don't know that I would recognize a Polish song that had lyrics unless someone said, "Hey, that's Polish."  You could always put something in your program explaining the cultural references.  The point should be more that it has meaning for YOU.</div>

  • It's somewhat easy to recognize a polish song over other music based on the language.  So recognizing it as polish wouldn't be an issue, and since just about all our guests would know that I'm a 1/4 Polish based on my only surviving Grandma that's not an issue either.  We really want to incorporate different aspects of our nationality and our family in the wedding music, either in the pre ceremony or during the actual ceremony.
