Help Wording Thank You for Monetary Gifts

We received a lot of generous monetary gifts from family and friends and i'm not sure how to tastefully word the thank you cards without sounding too generic/impersonal.

I tried googling and found a lot of samples that would state specifically what you'd be using the money for which I thought sounded a little weird.  We also don't have anything specific we plan to use the money for either.  How would you guys word the cards?

Personally, and this is just my opinion, if I give money, I like that a couple is going to put it use, you know? One of my friend's cousin had a wedding and, I kid you not, the couple spent the money they received on hiring a film crew to erm... film the wedding night consummation.

Can you say ew? As a giver, I wouldn't want my gift to be put to use that way. I'd have happily purchased a toaster or something instead.

I'm not encouraging you to lie on the cards - but I do think it's important to remember that guests want to feel like they've helped you in some way by giving the gift. So, I'm in favour of improving on the truth. Maybe you and your FI should sit down and talk about how you want to spend (or save) the money. There's nothing worse than frittering it all away and to have nothing to show for it, you know?

WTH.  Not cool.  Ew, ew, and more ew.

I agree with Alyson.  It's really nice to know that your gift is going toward something, even if it's unknown.  I would prefer "we're putting this toward our savings in case of a rainy day" or "we'll be saving this for when my beloved coffee maker finally stops brewing" or "we plan to save this towards a new couch once we finally move into our home" or "toward a trip to visit both families during the holidays".  It really could be anything you plan to spend it on, and sure, plans could change before you actually spend it, but I think the mention of what it is for is a very personal touch.

But really, if you can't come up with anything, I would put it say "savings for a rainy day" or "toward some upgrades of our favorite [furniture/appliances] as we start our new lives together".  Because, if you're not saving it, you're probably using it to replace something you have that stopped working.  :D

    Thanks for the input!

I guess my dilemma stemmed more from a culture clash issue.  I know my parents will have something negative to say to me if I were to name things I would go out and spend the money on, so maybe saying that we're saving for a rainy day might be the best way to go!  My parents and their friends are all about save, save, save..good advice but hard to put into a thank you card ya know?
