what to register for?

me and my fiance has now lived together for a year and we have no idea what to register for. we already have all the necessary household items. we decided on sheets for our new king size beds since most of our old sheets are queen size. and i want a portable casserole dish with carrying case and hot/cold packs. thats all we know to register for. any suggestions on other things?

Re: what to register for?

  • Did you think about upgrading your old things?  Or getting matching sets?  Like coordinating bathroom accessories or dinnerware or flatware, etc.  Maybe a new vacuum or new bedding in a design you like.  There's a sticky at the top also that gives some great ideas.

Try thinking in the direction of things you really want but never went out to buy yourself.  And have fun with it!
  • Yeah, I would just recommend registering for upgrades and maybe a few fun items that are specific to your interests as a couple-camping supplies, quirky cooking and baking tools if you two like to be in the kitchen, etc.

  • Are there any kitchen items you'd like (rice cooker, mixer, coffee maker, cooking utensils, serving bowls and platters)?  Home decor (vases, bowls, picture frames, boxes)?

When I was thinking of registering, I made a list of things during my day of things I wish I had to make life a little easier.  When I was cooking I thought it would have been nice to have an extra set of mixing bowls and more storage containers for leftovers.  Things like that are perfect for registries.

  • If there is a story you already know you want to register at (such as for the sheets), you could always look around to see what else sparks your interest.  There could be gadgets for the kitchen or something that you haven't thought of.
  • China
    Matching Towels
Matching everyday dishes (with serving pieces)
    Kitchen Electrics
    Wine glasses
    Vase
    Good knives
    Cloth Napkins and napkin rings
    Picture Frames
    Sheets, blanket
    Throw blanket

    Camping Items
    Tools

Read the sticky at the top of the page... or look at what Target/Macy's etc suggests you register for.

  • H and I had lived together for almost 4 years when we got married, and we found plenty of stuff to put on our registry.  All of our dinnerware, silverware, and most of our kitchen stuff were hand me downs from family members.  We registered for new dinnerware, silverware, and a bunch of kitchen stuff (crock pot, quesadilla maker, chip and dip bowls, lazy susan, drinking glasses, etc.)

Not to mention we also registered for towels for the guest bathrooms, sheets and blankets for the guest bedrooms, decorations for our house...there are really tons of things you can put on  your registry.

  • Most of our registry was replacing the old with new and very few things that we wanted (not necessarily needed!). We even added tools, BBQ stuff, etc. Some stores have gift cards, if it is somewhere that sells Visa gift cards add that to your list and you can use them alomst anywhere.
  • i agree with replacing the old with new. they are also ALWAYS making new shapes of pans! the other day i saw an oval, almost football shape pan ive never seen before.

also, what about things for guests? air mattresses, etc? or things that you and your FI will enjoy together, like board games?

it also never hurts to have extra towels :)
  • Upgrade what you have - it's going to wear out eventually.

DH and I were living together for 7 months before we got married and we were on our own for 15-20 years before moving in together.  A few Good Wills got some seriously nice donations when we combined households.

For our registry, we registered for new linens and towels, a new comforter set and then everything else was to upgrade our kitchen supplies - new small appliances, pots and pans, etc.

Under no circumstance should you do this.  It is as inappropriate as writing "please give us cash" on your invitation.

  • We did a lot of upgrades for our registry.  We had lived together for 3 years but most of our stuff was really old and it was nice to get matching pieces.

  • We've been living together for about three years, so we're in a similar situation. Think about what you guys love to do together, and then think about registering for tools to do those things. For example, we love wine! We're in an apartment so a wine fridge isn't a great idea, but a wine aerator is an option.

In addition, there's this new concept where your guests can give you things to do on your honeymoon (dinner, activities, even a hotel). There are lots of sites that do this, but here's one that seems really reliable: http://www.honeyfund.com/.

It works the way a regular registry does, but you can register for specific activities you'd like to do on your honeymoon. It's a fun way for guests to be involved in giving you something awesome/unique, and you guys can do more on your honeymoon! :)

Again, don't do this.  At the top of page 3 of this board is a post called Traveler's Joy vs. Honeyfund.   There are 96 responses on there that will explain why this is also just as bad as writing "just give us cash" on your invitation.
