Having second thoughts...

I hired Maui'd Forever as our wedding coordinator and now I'm starting to have second thoughts. I read good things about them online, but I'm starting to get nervous because they didn't have nearly as many positive reviews as the other coordinators that you all are using. I'm also a little apprehensive now about the fact that everything is packaged together.

At first I thought it was a good thing because it saves money and hassle but I'm now a little nervous.

I'm getting the hair stylist through them as well as flowers. I hope that I can get a hair trial before the wedding but I don't know if that's an option. My hair is difficult to work with since it's frizzy and I have a LOT of little flyaways. Some people can really work with it well, but some times when I've gotten formal hair dos it's ended terribly!

Did any of you go with an all-inclusive kind of package? Am I freaking out over nothing?

Have you personally experienced issues with them?  Or just getting nervous based on the negative reviews?  It's ok to not be as popular as the other vendors...the popular ones got there because people took a chance on them at some point, too.

As for the package, only you know if that works best for you.  I knew from the getgo I wanted to design the elements & pick my own vendors, but not everyone wants to go through that trouble.  You have to be willing to let go of some control, but frankly, your planning process can be a lot simpler that way.  You could always talk to your coordinator about applying the money toward a customized package instead of staying with the package you paid for. Also, you should make it clear that you require a hair trial before the wedding, and that is a requirement for any vendor they pick.  Expect to pay extra for the trial since it's likely not included in your package.  Or, ask for the stylists' name and make the appointment yourself :-)

I agree with Tanq, if you haven't had any problems with them, then don't expect there to be any just because someone else was unhappy with them.  Some people won't complain no matter what goes wrong, and some people will complain if a piece of paper was out of place.  You really can't judge someone 100% by ratings, especially if there are a mix of both good and bad.

That said, I chose my coordinator as she offers a coordination package where I still had control over most things (I am a total control freak), and the few vendors I knew I absolutely had to have - I told her that right away.  I ended up choosing everything and getting control, but at the same time I had her to recommend folks that she has worked with in the past.

For your hair, you need to really just call your desired stylist and set up an appointment.  We are arriving on island 3 days before our wedding, 2 of which are a Sunday & the 4th of July so I called and set up my hair trial on the Saturday we get there cause I absolutely could not miss out on it.  Like you, I have a LOT of flyaways as I have naturally curly, fine hair and I straighten it everyday so there is some broken hair that likes to stick up.  I did not leave this scheduling up to my coordinator, I actually called my stylist and setup the trial.

I agree with ppl - don't let popularity necessarily fool you!  Good reviews are always a plus, but there have been a few vendors that were VERY popular with brides and with rave reviews, who I just wasn't impressed with...  Sometimes when vendors become super popular, they become overbooked/overwhelmed and the personal attention just isn't there...  What kind of negative reviews did you hear?

As for packages, it definitely requires more of a hands-off approach when it comes to certain details.  But then again, it sounds like that's what you wanted and perhaps it'll save you a lot of unnecessary worry/hassle in the end?  Maybe take a look at that vendor's portfolio and previous weddings to see whether you like the style of flowers, set-up, etc. that you have little control over.  If you like what you see, maybe just trust them?  If you don't, that might require a bit more input and "steering" them in the right direction.

As for hair, I'd imagine that scheduling a hair trial wouldn't be a problem...just an extra cost on your part?  The coordinator might charge an extra fee for organizing it.  Maybe ask whether you can get in touch with the H&M person directly to discuss preferences (without mentioning the trial, hehe)??

I don't think there's too much to worry about at this point... but at least you're being realistic and know what you're getting yourself into.  At least now you know what to keep an eye on, what to follow up with, and if issues arise, you can take whatever actions are necessary to make your vision a reality.  HTH!!!  :)
