Zumba!

I tried Zumba for the very first time today and don't quite know how I feel about it. On one hand, it was pretty fun (despite having no rhythm and feeling silly doing some of the moves) and the hour-long class FLEW by. I don't know how effective of a workout it actually is, though. Despite sweating and having an elevated heartbeat by the end of it, I just didn't feel the same burn as I do when running or lifting weights.

Anyone else into Zumba? Any tips to help me find my groove and get a kick-ass workout from it?

Re: Zumba!

  • I have no real input, but one of these days I'm going to break down and try Zumba.  I don't know why I haven't yet.  Almost everyone who does it seems to love it!
  • I always sweat harder and feel like I've had more of a workout once I KNOW the routine's -- I can push a little deeper and work a little harder.  When I first learn -- I feel llike I'm half a**ing it because I don't know what's coming up next...

  • I bought the zumba wii game, which I know is going to be nothing like a class, but, I have no rhythm and would probably be going in the wrong direction and bumping into people.

I really felt like I'd worked hard after it, though. It was knackering, I was sweating, out of breath, my muscles hurt... even though I missed half the steps/hadn't done them right, I didn't stop moving/trying.

I haven't gone back to it since though. Dog gets piissy when I'm upstairs without him and chews stuff up, and the cat breaks into the room I'm in and starts climbing up my leg for attention. I'm not allowed an hour to myself in this house :P
  • I tried it again after a long break and fell in love with it once again.  I love cardio dance classes.  I prefer turbokick and cardiofunk, but love zumba, too.  I've been running a lot, training for my next half, but I much prefer shaking my booty than running!  Once you get the moves down you work out even harder and so fun.  The new place I go to turn the lights down and turns on the disco lights...pretty awesome.
  • Thanks ladies! I agree that knowing the routines will probably help me to be able to "dig deeper" than I did yesterday.

Anna, you should totally try it - I was surprised at how much I actually enjoyed myself (this coming from a girl who prefers solitary, quiet exercise like running and swimming).

  • I absolutely LOVE Zumba. I've been to a few live classes and my work out definitely depends on the instructor and the music. I also have Zumba for the Xbox Kinect, too, which is a great work-out. PPs are correct--once you know the routines, you'll be able to push it harder. You'll know what's coming and different ways to make it more difficult for yourself! Have fun and enjoy!!

  • Ok, this is something I wish I had done before my wedding! Depending on how hard you work and the intensity of your trainer, you can burn hundreds of calories in an hour!!!! Plus it is sooo much fun! My gym also has 3 different instructors so its nice sometimes to go to 2 different classes each week to keep things fresh and new.  I say keep it up!

I have been doing zumba for more than a year, and I really love it because I used to dance in college. However, I feel it is inadequate in itself. I also do weight lifting and kickboxing, and I've seen more results with that combination as compared to doing zumba alone. It's a good compliment to a workout but you need strength training too.
  • I tried Zumba over the summer, and I loved my first class. I went to a bunch of different places for it, and I found that there was only one instructor that I really enjoyed it with. Unfortunately, it is $12 per class, and I just couldn't afford it. My gym has free Zumba classes for members, but I don't like the instructor, so I don't go. However, the right instructor makes the class a total blast! The class I loved made me feel so happy! I smiled the entire time. I felt like I had done a lot afterwards. Worst Zumba experience was when I took a class at a dance studio, and it wound up being just me, one other woman, and the instructor. Awkward.
