Venue Recommendations for Reception

Hi everyone,

I am hoping that you might be able to help us with some venue recommendations. We have been looking everywhere and every time I think we have found someplace perfect it is leaps and bounds above our budget or way to small. So I decided to reach out to the knot community. Hopefully there are some other budget brides that have someplacethey can recommend.

We have a pretty tight budget of no more than $1500 for the venue rental, beverages, and decorations. We have the food covered by an outside caterer/ entertainment provider who is giving us an amazing deal (only $3.5 per person for food and DJ services) so we need someplace that will allow us to bring them in.

It needs to be able to accommodate 250-275 people, preferably no more than 1 hour outside of the twin cities but we are flexible if it will provide us with the space and is within our budget. I have looked at places as far away at Duluth hoping to find something affordable.

Any recommendations are appreciated I am willing to consider anything an option.

Not sure how much the rental is, but I'm guessing it is not bad.  Went to a reception there, and the couple provided their own food and bartender.

I also found this nice list of available venues in the Twin Cities:

  • You could check out the day block building in mpls or the Isanti county fairgrounds in Cambridge. I am having my ceremony and reception at the fairgrounds in the community building. Its a lot cheaper than anywhere around the cities and it's pretty casual which is what we were goin for!
  • One more suggestion...have you looked into having it at any American Legions?  For instance, the one in Champlin:  http://www.champlinlegion.org/amenities  I went to a reception there.

I'm not exactly sure about whether you can bring in food or not.  But, it is $500 for rental, and there is a bar attached.  The bar is open to the puclic, but it is in a seperate room from the reception hall.  And it wasn't like it was packed.

Will you let us know what you decide to go with? :-)
  • I'm not familiar with all of their restrictions on food and whatnot or their prices, but you may want to look into the Eagan Community Center. I think they would fit a group that size and I want to say they are more lax on catering restrictions than many other places.

Can you tell us which venues you've already checked off your list? That might help us think of more ideas.

A lot of Community Centers can be pretty picky about who you bring in to cater.  My cousin had that problem for her wedding since she already had an outside caterer.  She ended up at a Catholic church in Inver Grove Heights and they had 260 guests and not cramped at all (sorry I can't remember the name) - they even had their wedding at a different church first.  Maybe check around for some local churches.  Prices are usually great too.

We have checked the local Legions and unfortunately the ones in the area we have looked into are to small. My friend is actually having her ceremony and reception at Eagan Community Center this August it is a beautiful venue but they do require you to go through one of their three caterers and have a larger food and beverage minimum.

We have not checked into the Champlin Legion so I will look into that tomorrow thank you for the recommendation.

We are currently waiting to hear back from the contact at Fort Snelling however, it sounds like that might be pushing the budget and may not be able to accomodate the number of people we want. Crossing our fingers though until we actually get to talk with someone there because they have a church and a ceremony location we would be able to use.

I am completely open to using a fairground but I was unsure how to go about contacting them. Agrubb88 When you reserved your space at the Isanti fairgrounds did they have an option to provide chairs and tables for you? Or are you doing that through an outside vendor?

Alot of the big name places that you see posted on the wedding websites I have pretty much crossed off the list. There are quite a few of them. We are pretty sure it will have to be a more untraditional or not as well known venue if we are going to pay the price that our budget allows.

I will make sure to post what venue we end up deciding upon though. I am really looking forward to getting this part figured out. I am sure my fiance is ready for it too. :)

I do have a few great ideas that you all posted though that I am looking forward to checking out. Thank you!
