Looking for UNUSUAL venue!

I live in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, and I have been researching online for interesting and unique venues for about 2 weeks. I have found NOTHING for reception spaces! The Knot site doesn't have anything even within an hour of us, and other sites list the same old places over and over. I can't do a hotel, conference center, or banquet hall. I just can't!!
We found an amazing old opera house that could do the ceremony, but has no space for a reception of 150 guests. Otherwise, I've been thinking of libraries, airports, museums, movie theaters (my personal favorite, if we could find a good one), etc. Our style is more urban than rural (no barns!) I want to plan my theme around the space.
Anyone have advice on what types of buildings to look into? Keep in mind, we're not near a huge city, and we have to stay in budget.

How about The History Museum at the Castle in Appleton?
I am not quite sure what rental price is, but it is something I myself have considered looking into.
I have been struggling with the exact same situation you describe and it is quite frustrating.

I'm not familiar with Oshkosh myself, but perhaps you could see if there is any space for rental at the University.  I know some of the colleges near Milwaukee have beautiful atriums and rooms for rent.  Perhaps UW Oskkosh does?

Can you look into some sort of boathouse?  Or a warehouse somewhere in the city? That might be neat.  I really don't know much about Oshkosh, I grew up in GB though.  What about the EAA?

Not sure if you want it exactly in Oshkosh, but theres a place in Appleton called Homestead Meadows which is super nice. You will have to cater in, but its not a banquet hall like you were saying you didnt want.. It is a little pricey but thats kind of what you get when not wanting to go to a banquet hall. You also get use of the whole facility for the whole day you book for your wedding.

I've been to a wedding at EAA before, it was really neat. Not sure if UW rents out the Union, might depend on whether or not your wedding was during the academic year.

My first wedding was at the Paine Art Center, it was beautiful, but not cheap. At the time, you could do it outside or inside. The reception was at the Algoma Club, they closed for awhile but I believe they have reopened. The food was fantastic and it's a really cool old building. (Above what used to be the Water City Grill, I think it's now an Irish restaurant? Moved up to Appleton a year ago so not sure what's there anymore).

If you're willing to travel to Appleton, I saw some pictures of a wedding at Pullman's which is right on the river. Looked pretty cool. I'm settling into Appleton so not sure what else is here, we're doing ours in our backyard. :)

    Good luck!
