Dress shopping!

Hi ladies!

Hope everyone is getting excited that most of our weddings are only a year away soon! I wanted to get people's opinions on dress shopping. I was thinking about starting towards the end of July. When are all of you starting or have you already?? For some reason the whole process makes me a little nervous and I don't know why! I think I'm just afraid to buy something too early and then not liking it later.

Happy planning everyone!

Re: Dress shopping!

  • I'm going in July. I made appointments yesterday since my mom and MOH both need about a month's heads up to get the time off work. I'm really excited to go, but also nervous!

  • I'm going on Friday! My sister lives in Florida and it was really important to her that she came with me, and flights were more affordable for early June than the rest of the summer. ::shakes fist at Disney:: I'm nervous and excited. :

  • I got my dress already, I couldn't wait to start lol. I was nervous that I would buy something and not like it later also, but I also knew myself and knew that I would nit-pick at things and have a hard time finding one so I wanted as much time as possible. And I was right, I had to try on a lot of dresses and found something wrong with most of them until I found THE ONE. Now, I don't worry at all that I'll find something I like better because I love my dress and wish I could wear it everyday. :) Good luck on your search ladies, have have soooo much fun while doing it!!!!!

  • I'm planning on going at the end of July since that is when my mom will be visiting. I'm going to visit her in two weeks so we might stop by a David's bridal just to look but I'm not planning on buying until she comes to visit and my sister can be with us. I'm also soooo nervous about buying too early since I tend to change my mind on styles frequently. I probably change my outfit at least three times every morning before I leave the house lol

  • I got my dress already too. It was being discontinued and was afraid I would be wishing  I had bought it. Nice discount price. I love my dress but Im a little sad I cant go try on more dresses. haha

  • I went in late April and again in May. I chose one dress, but just wasn't quite happy with the look. Then when I went with my girls I found my dress. I actually got to try it on again Wednesday to confirm my size. I absolutely love it! I won't be ordering until October, even though my designer does get dresses back in 6 mo, I have to go elsewhere for a seamstress (The shop gave me a list of recommended ones) and don't want to be rushing that person.

I hope you find the perfect dress for all of you! Go with your gut and take a trusted person with you who will give you their honest opinion that you respect. Mine was my cousin and that was because we just know each other so well.
  • Dress shopping is so much fun! I've already bought my dress, but my parents are paying for most of our wedding, so we are trying to spread out the expenses a bit, and thus I've decided to get a dress early. I went with my mom and my future MIL, and the first store that we went to had THE dress! I have a picture of me in it on my profile page if you are curious. :)

  • I was planning on going at the end of the month - have an appointment at Christina's in Andover, MA, on June 30th - but my sister convinced me to make an appointment at Kleinfeld's on June 9th since we will be in NYC for my brother's med school graduation! I am sooo not ready to try on dresses - feel like I need a solid 3 more weeks of daily workouts!!! Yikes!

  • I have been planning on starting the process in early September.. but after reading all your posts is that too late? My mother is paying so I wanted to give her plenty of time to save up, but I don't want to end up going naked to my wedding lol

n3rd, most salons recommend ordering your dress around ten months before your wedding, I believe. That way, when the dress is made/shipped and you try it on, if the sizing is horribly off, or it was made in the wrong color, or whatever, they will have time to remake your dress and still leave you time for alterations. Call around to the salons you plan on going to and ask what they recommend...since June is a popular month for weddings, I'm guessing they're going to tell you to start looking sooner than September (and remember, there's no guarantee you will find a dress you love right away...you may end up needing several appointments before you pick one).

Edit: I just re-read what you wrote about your mom and saving up for the dress. I think the typical arrangement is 50% of the balance of the dress down to order it, and then you can pay off the remaining 50% up until you need to start alterations.

  • Thanks for all the input ladies! Best of luck with your shopping :)
