BIrds as ring bearer?

Hi there! Does anyone know where to get an owl or similar bird of prey (falcon, hawk) and handler to be a ring bearer? I saw this on t.v. and thought it would be neat in our Renaissance faire themed wedding (keep thinking of the owl Merlin in Disney's the Sword in the Stone). I am preferring the Austin area since that is where the wedding is at but also willing to look at all the areas on this side of the map (San Antonio, the Valley, Dallas area, the Coast, Houston). If you know of anyone who would be willing please send me their link or info. This is very popular in Europe but have not found anything locally yet.
Thanks,
Kaylyn

Just a question...  What if the bird goes rouge and flies away?  (this is a serious question)

will you have a backup ring? Or will it not have the 'real' ring?

I thought this was hilarious when this was first posted. After 3 Long Islands, it's even more funny.

This is the royal falconer's site from Waxahachie's Renassance Festival.  I doubt that based on the feel of his show at the Ren Faire that he'll warm to the idea of using his birds to do your wedding, but how will you know for sure if you don't ask.

There's also a group that usually does the state fair.  you might go to their site and see if they're a different group.

Maybe Medieval Times can help you. They have a hawk thing in their show.

But seriously how are you going to get the bird to come to you? Don't they use meat to attract it? Just what I want all over my FIs hand as he slides that ring on my finger is meat residue.

Oooh baby, what'd you marinate that in? I love that wormy saliva flavor.
That'll attract any other bird that doesn't have ring bearer etiquette and they might shat on your head.

I agree that this is a risky endeavor.

Most knotties may curse this suggestion but if this is one of your 'must haves' you might consider a replica. I know it wouldn't be the same as a real bird.. but a replica or stuffed bird won't pose a flight risk. Take it or leave it... some may shoot down methods you've conceptualized but if you want your rings delivered to your hand by birds, no need to silence creativity by grounding your idea.

If you do go with the birds at your reception, call them "wing bearers."

    Oh, no you di-n't.

You know what, OP, I say go for it.  You have your Renaissance-themed wedding.  A falcon is probably less likely to have a meltdown in the middle of the aisle than a kid, so that makes this a fabulous idea.

Alternative suggestion, if you can't get a bird and you do end up having to use kids, dress them as hobbits.

I read about this being done on another post a few months ago. I can see where it might be a bad idea, but I think it is neat. In reality these birds are very well trained. I would just be sure to research your falconer to make sure the bird is trained and maybe even do a trial or two before the wedding day. Good Luck!

For you ladies that are so against it:  Most animals can be trained to be very beneficial. Can they be unpredictable, yes! But that does not stop us from using animals in other parts of our lives. For example there are thousands of dog bites a year, but we still use dogs for service animals and family pets. Horses kick, bite, buck, and and step on people. But we still ride them, use them for wagons and buggies, and some even use miniature horses as service animals. These birds are usually raised by the falconers and are very well trained. The falconers have to even go through an apprenticeship before they can have a bird of prey.

The hawk in our backyard had babies :) If you call the FD maybe they might let you borrow their super long ladder truck thingy to get them!

I'd frown against it though. They aren't very nice. They tried to eat my weenie dog last week. Think The Proposal movie style with Sandra Bullock swinging her arms....
