Photo Phriday

Yay it's Friday!

Not much to share this week, but here's some fun.

My thoughts on salad, exactly.

  • Haha Lobsters, I love it! I get the ethical reasons why people are vegetarians and vegans, but every time I see memes on facebook about why I'm awful for eating meat, I can't help but think "but it's so dang tasty!"

If you guys haven't seen it yet, check out "After ever after"

  • This is my little yorkie cuddling with one of her favorite toys. This sea horse was her favorite toy that she took everywhere with her. Then one night she decided that she loved it so much that she tore all the stuffing out of it. After we had to throw it out, she was depressed for like a week. FI went out and bought 3 more seahorses because he never wanted to see her that sad again!!

  • So I'm doing my PhD in History and one of the (not very many) perks is that I get to travel to do research. I went on my first research trip last summer to France and Serbia and this summer I get to go again and have just booked my flight and lodging for Paris and am so excited to be going back. I want to share with you what is possibly the most orgasmically delicious dessert I have ever eaten. It's a tart from Pierre Herme that was a special summer feature. It's a tart shell with rose and almond flavoured cream, grilled peaches and cumin. It doesn't look like much and sounded weird to me but holy moly, it was mindblowingly delicious! I could have easily had 10 of these. Luckily there's only so much I can eat before I quickly become fat and broke, haha. But I really hope he brings it back this summer. And I will attempt to make it at home one of these days. But man. What an amazing pastry.

@cat... that looks so incredibly amazing!

So I've been working ridiculous hours for the past few weeks and traveling on top of it.  Just pulled out of the Half I was supposed to run in a few weeks.  In addition to missing my husband (who is so obsessed with March Madness that I don't think he misses me), here's the other thing I miss... my cool new running shoes!

  • Unchatenfrance: No way! I am a history PHD student as well! Although a very bad one. That is so sweet. Do you do migration? Just wondering, because you have France and Serbia as fields.
  • Lia, I am convinced you have one of the coolest jobs out there. You get to play with manatees and sea turtles. I am awed and jealous. :D
  • Meanpony: No way! I do political history, actually. My dissertation is on post-1945 Franco-Yugoslavian relations so I go to France and Serbia to hit up the diplomatic archives. I have the languages (I'm from from ex-Yugoslavia originally and I studied French) so it seemed like a good option for me. Do you work on migration?
  • Unchat, that's exciting!
My fields also involved Modern Europe and I worked with a Soviet historian, and although Yugoslavia wasn't really part of it, due to them not really being a direct part of the Union and such (unless I recall wrongly), it was awesome to study that part of the world. I am usually focused on Central Europe (ok, Germany, to be exact. I am from there, so I have the language) and I do study migration. I am interested in Jewish Displaced Persons after World War II, interacting with the locals that caused their displacement. I go to my hometown and hit up the archives. I have found Jewish DPs in the archives, although cannot trace interaction with townies yet. I have read an anthropologist though, who says that silence is a coping mechanism for dealing with strangers, so, maybe it is true that silence speaks louder than words? Sadly, the local Jewish community has no DPs, which makes sense, since most of them wanted to leave Germany as fast as humanly possible. Sorry for the book length answer, I am currently working out what exactly my diss will be on, and it is a bloody nightmare.
In Response to Re: Photo Phriday : The manatees weren't work related, we just drove out to Crystal River to swim with them. Anyone can do it! The water is really cold, so not something I'd do again and again, but everyone should do it once.

Omg! I have swam there! No manatees that day though, and you're right, it was COLD. But beautiful and totally worth ruining my bathing suit. (It started to bleed color after the swim.lol)
In Response to Re: Photo Phriday : Then you have to go when it is even colder. The manatees like the springs and cluster around them when it is cold, so they are there really reliably, but as it gets warmer they spread out again. We were in full wetsuits and still freezing, but there were more manatees than you could count.
    Posted by Liatris2010
That makes sense. H and I, visited his good friend, who lives near there. We went when it was  still warm and tons of people were there, so it wasn't exactly manatee friendly. I know H will hopefully visit his friend again very soon, so maybe he'll have more luck then!
  • Pony, you have a PM so we're not hijacking the thread with our nerdy history talk :-)
  • oh lordy... It's been a long week.
I am NOT a college student.
Spring break PCB was miserable for me and I ended up coming home with the flu. How nice....
Really, the only thing I enjoyed while my gf was here was walking H's flightline and doing the 5k. All my pictures seems to be "too big" to upload here. rude.

trying on my Hs gear. My girlfriend wanted to see what he flies and the blue angels are in the hanger next door to his so we walked over there too

     on his plane

Not gonna lie.. it was a pretty nice perk of marrying an aviator that we could just.. walk up to the Blue Angels like it was NBD haha
unchat, the dessert looks delicious.  If you ever figure out how to make it at home, you must share the recipe.

</div><div>I definitely will! I have a jar of cumin I bought a few weeks ago just for this recipe sitting in my cupboard. I don't think I'll be able to get to this until mid-April but I will definitely keep you guys posted!

    </div>
  • lia - not sure if i already shared this but i swam w/ the manatees in Crystal River as well.  it was ridiculously cold in Florida then so i was borderline hypothermic, but it was a lot of fun.  Particularly when I didn't realize there was a manatee below me and it surfaced like a submarine.  Long story short: I got goosed by a manatee.  and it was awesome.

<div>We're not sure. I adopted him from a shelter and they had no background. People typically guess that he is mixed with corgi or chihuahua.</div>
