Flowers or lanterns??

We are getting married outside, at sunset at a very nice golf resort just outside Las Vegas.  The only ceremony decor we are having is the existing arch (that is covered with real greenery) and candles.  I'm going to line the aisle with candles in mason jars and have candles in jars hanging from the arch.

I'm trying to decide what to do about bouquets.  I thought at first it would be neat for myself and my two bridesmaids to carry pretty lanterns instead of flowers since the ceremony will be over around dark.  BUT I also know that a lantern won't look as pretty in the pictures beforehand.

What do you guys think about this?  Would lanters be ok to be used in place of a tradidional flower bouquet?

Thanks in advance

Re: Flowers or lanterns??

  • A lantern could be pretty for a few photos, but it might be awkward to actually walk down the aisle with. That said, I'm intrigued by the idea. Have you found any lanterns you like yet?

  • if you want to incorporate lanterns, maybe have them along the aisles and still have the BMs carry flowers.  I've also seen BMs carry asian fans instead of flowers if your flower budget is tight.
  • I have found a few that I thought were pretty.  (see pic below for sort of what I'm talking about) I figured I'd use those fake flicker type candles since otherwise it might get hot.  I've looked at the type below then a few that are a little fancier.

I really can't make up my mind though, we are going to do a photo tour around Vegas before the wedding so I'm thinking flowers will look better because of that.

I just thought I'd get others opinions.

  • I'm definitely more modern in style, so I LOVE the idea of lanterns! So much so that i wish I had thought of that... lol.. I don't care for cut flowers though, so I may be the wrong person to answer... but I think it would be adorable, and then you don't waste money on a thing that will die the next day.
  • The fan wouldn't go with our "Big Fat Irish Wedding" at all. lol  My flower budget is what I make it because if indeed I decide on flowers I'm going to DIY them.  Since we are getting married in Vegas (and we live in GA) that is the only way to guarantee I get what I want since there isn't going to be a "scouting trip" before hand.   And I'm already lining the whole aisle with candles in jars and hanging jars/candles from the arch that we will be standing in front of.

  • I'm doing lanterns also, with led lights, we are going to snaz them up a bit but I think they will look modern and create a nice glow. I'm debating on the idea of the BM placing them on the ground up front during the ceremony.

  • If you're already lining the aisle and the altar with lanterns, I think having your BMs carry them too might be overkill. Plus if you're all going all over Vegas for photos ... I think flowers might be the way to go. Vegas isn't a quick/easy town to get around, everything is spread out so much farther than you think.

  • Not sure.  Have you asked your photographer?  He/she may have an opinion.
