Introduction and a Question

Hi, everyone!
I figured it's time for me to introduce myself as I've been around here for a while! I'm finishing up my last year of school while my fiance is in Afghanistan (Army).  We've been together for about three years and we're getting married June 16th, 2012.

In addition, I have a question! Someone I am Facebook friends with just posted about some personnel/morale problems in her boyfriend's platoon (USMC, currently training in the US)...is this an OPSEC violation? Regardless, it seems like something that doesn't need to be aired in a status.

Thanks!

Welcome! I am not an expert in OPSEC/PERSEC but my guideline is this: If it even raises a question in my mind, then it's probably too much information. Whether I am reading it or writing it, if it strikes me with even the slightest question of "is this too much?" then I always just assume that it is. That's just how I go about it, though, and like I said I am not well-versed in OPSEC/PERSEC. I'm still kinda new to the military thing, so I always take the route of better safe than sorry.

On a side note, we are wedding date twins! Our date is also June 16, 2012. How nifty :) It's cool to think that on my wedding day, somewhere in the world, someone else is sharing the same wonderful life-changing event of their own. Congratulations and, once again, welcome to the boards!

it it mentions time/date/location/particular people/ranks/platoon number  then YES it's a violation.
If it's just someone bitching about a crappy day or whatnot, then not really.. although it's greatly frowned upon. It probably doesn't need to air put as the person's status, but not something to jump on if it's just a vague comment.

I agree with Jess, If it so much as raises a question in my mind, I will rephrase what I was saying, or I'll let the OP know in a nice way... Maybe the FB friend doesn't know that it's a no no.. I would send her a message because "Loose Lips, Sink Ships"  Wink

(That was the only quote like that I could think of...)

OPSEC rules specifically state that you should not post information regarding the morale of a unit.  It is considered a violation no matter if they are deployed or in a training situation.

Welcome!, and for your question: as PP stated if you question if it's ok or not don't bother putting it out there.

@ Sami, I was totally expecting the ETA to read: Welcome aboard!  after reading your sink ship comment :) I saw the word "welcome: thought instantly the next word would "aboard"  :)
