Special Songs

I know we've done playlists etc - with so many of our weddings being non traditional, who is doing the "traditional" dances? We've gone back and forth a few times on what songs to dance to, and i think we settled on this for our first dance:
Kevin Quain - Rain on the Midway - http://www.tumblr.com/tagged/rain-on-the-midway

The other major contenders were:
Jack Johnson - Angel - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U9wu-lAQBHw (I think i may walk down the aisle to this now)

And this song just always brings me to tears, i think we are going to do it as our last dance:

I need to figure out how to get Ray Lamontagne's You Are the Best thing in there too lol.

My father and I aren't doing the walk down the aisle or anything, but I wanted to pick a special memory song for our first dance - Marty Robbins - White Sport Coat & a Pink Carnation - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zD8MnvyAi6I

what are you guys planning on doing?

    Ooh, those are lovely.

I'm walking down the aisle to:
Love Story vs. Viva La Vida http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zkQqXO_OFYY
Realizing this is WAY too long for a normal processional song, I'm hoping to have grandmothers/mothers/BMs/FG precede me, and hoping that will fill the first few minutes...maybe if they don't start walking until 2:38, BMs come in at 3:35,  and my dad and I come in at...uhh?  Not sure.  I've got my heart set on this one, so I'm attempting to figure it out.

    Our recessional-- likely:
Junkie XL cover of Elvis' "A Little Less Conversation" :http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U3Pey2UZh2E
    or
David Holmes' "69 Police" from Ocean's Eleven: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kLkrcyh_Hzg (Minus the odd French bit at the beginning)

Our announcement at the reception-- TBD, either:
Calvin Harris ft. Ne Yo, "Let's Go" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qpMbjW43vGY
    or
Rick Astley, "Never gonna Give You Up" (so help me, I do love a good Rickroll)

    Our first dance:
Peter Gabriel's version of "The Book of Love", specifically because of its use in the finale of Scrubs: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EiJGk3Rzbvs&feature=fvst

...and then we're actually transitioning into a surprise choreographed dance to "Poison" by Bel Biv DeVoe.  It is super cheesy and we're hoping it'll get a laugh out of the crowd. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N6blgjF6UkU

    For our dad/mom dances--

Mine: Taylor Swift's "The Best Day" (I love the lyrics) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hq4W68_h6rw

His: Ben E. King "Stand by Me" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hmGQ5SlazJA

...so yeah, for a non-traditional wedding we seem to be doing all the traditional song stuff, haha.
  • dear lord - i am a sucker for a music montage - that scrubs clip had me all veklempt! What a perfect perfect song - do you play the clip and get a bit emotional thinking about dancing to it at your wedding? (if not then i've clearly just opened myself up to much ridicule as i do it with my songs often lol)

love your choices - so interesting and different - please do rick astley. :)

  • Our specific music choices were this:

Processional- Bruno Mars "Marry You" (after I saw that video of the guy who danced to that song in Downtown Dsiney & proposed to his girlfriend I just HAD to use it somehow! Pretty & fun song)

Recessional- Michael Franti w/ Spearhead- "Say Hey (I Love You)"

First dance- Avenged Sevenfold- "Warmness on the Soul" (we are metal heads, that is like our favorite band & I had been looking forward to dancing to that song for a long time!!! Hubby cried, it was awesome :])

Father Daughter dances (I have 2 dads): The Temptations "My Girll" & Louis Armstrong "What a Wonderful World"

Mother/Son dance: Nat King Cole "Unforgettable"

The last 3 are pretty cliche but everyone liked them & I was also conscious of the length of the songs.. didn't want anything too long. After that it was all party! We didn't have an entrance song but if we had, it would've been Jace Everett "Bad Things" (the True Blood theme song lol). The first dances were pretty much the only thing we did that was truly traditional.

    Good luck!

  • Lots of nice choices here!!  I'm not going to help at all, but ramble about our stuff... haha.

We're not doing any traditional dances besides a first dance... and we're using Ray LaMontange's You Are The Best Thing - haha!  It was the first song we danced to together and happened to be in Vegas :)

We picked a lot of VSQ tracks for our ceremony.
  • @themrsJRD - funny thing about the metal - my FH and his friendsa are major metalheads, and i am not at all. I'm having them play Metallica with the San Fran Symphony while people are being seated (not telling him that ahead of time :)) and we're going to mix in some Megadeth, Metallica, Iron Maiden etc throughout the night :)

I so want us to walk down the aisle to You Make My Dreams Come True by Hall and Oates - but I want to dance to it later! lol Maybe I'll use You Are the Best Thing for that one - our aisle at teh Platinum is so short!

[QUOTE]We're entering the reception to "Waking Up in Vegas" by Katy Perry. I thought I was going to have to arm-wrestle FI for that one, but he caved after I told him he could pick our first dance. :) We're still working on the other stuff since we have a few months to decide.

Ditto on Katy Perry! We are using that too. I wanted to use it for the recessional but I think we will use it to enter the reception. So cheesy, but fun! :)

We are also going to pick a ton of Vitamin String Quartet for the ceremony... Haven't picked too many specifics but I know I want "all you need is love" in there somewhere
  • It took us forever to figure out what we were going to play walking up the aisle and down the aisle.

Finally settled for Ben Folds "the Luckiest" to walk up to and Stevie Wonders "Signed, Sealed, Delivered" for the recessional.  I think they are going to be perfect!
  • We used some VSQ for the ceremony - parents & bridal party walked in to the Beatles' All You Need is Love, my processional was U2's All I Want is You.

Elvis' A Little Less Conversation when pronounced H&W

Reception Entrance was Tonight's Gonna Be a Good Night, BEP (kind of cheesy but fun)

First Dance - Forever by Ben Harper
Father/Daughter Dance - In My Life, Beatles
Mother/Son Dance - Elvis' version of Impossible Dream - we told MIL to pick the song and that's what she chose, she's a huge Elvis fan.

  • For me walking down the aisle we are having my future step son play and record ont the piano Adele's version of "Make You Feel My Love"

For the recessional we are playing "We'll Be Together" from Grease

We aren't having traditional dances, our reception will be at an Irish pub where there will be a live band.  Whatever the band plays for us that is slow will be our first dance.

  • I'm going to walk down the aisle to "Whiter Shade of Pale" by Procol Harem - it was my parent's first dance song at their wedding.  And our recessional is going to be Love & Marriage by Frank Sinatra.  We're having a pianist play for our ceremony so I wanted the recessional to be something everyone would recognize.

Our entrance at the reception will be " I Gotta A Feeling" Black Eyed Peas - I know it's over played but it was playing when FI and I had our first kiss and has kind of become our unofficial song.

First dance - Bless the Broken Road - Rascal Flatts - the lyrics pretty much sum us up perfectly.

Father/daughter dance - In My Life - The Beatles - It's my dad's favorite song of all time

Mother/Son Dance - Simple Man - Lynyrd Skynyrd

  • @Caper18 LOVE Simple Man!! - i need to listen to that right now! :)

@Brookrich - make you feel my love is so beautiful - what a nice way to do it

I think that In My Life is one of those songs that you neve get tired of :)
