Marriage license vent/PSA

Rats! Just when I thought the worst was over. FI and I were planning to go this Friday to get our marriage license, only to find out that we can't because FI's birth certificate is MIA! He's filed for a replacement and it SHOULD take a week (though bureaucracy being what it is, I'll believe that when I see it) to get here, but our plan to get it out of the way this week is shot.

To everyone else who hasn't gotten their license yet, I suggest you start looking up your state's requirements and finding your documentation, and your FI's documentation, NOW. We still have time, but it would suck royally to have waited any longer only to find out you don't have what you need!

  • Does your state actually say it requires birth certificates?
It doesn't have to be perfect to be everything I want!

Thanks for posting this!  I looked it up right away.  CA only requires a driver's license or valid passport....are you sure you need a birth cert??  I googled NY, and took only a few seconds to look (so I could have missed it), but it says it just requires proper identification, including a DL.

  • good luck --- we needed to get fi a new birth certificate to get our passports and it took 3 months for it to come !!!!!!!! our passports came in under a month though!

Yep. Considering what the other options are for proof of age, the birth certificate is our best bet.

  • Crap !!! We were planning on going this friday as well but MY birth certificate seems to be MIA!!  My parents are out of the county all week so I can't even ask them if they have it!  Here's to hoping it turns up ASAP!!

  • I know from experience that you need a birth certificate for you marriage license in NY. For those like me that are encore brides make sure you have your divorce documents because most states need that too. FL doesn't though for some reason

  • WOW! We brought our photo ID and SS cards... I am divorced once and didn't even need to show the record for that in SC

  • I can't even apply for mine for another 2-3 weeks because they're only valid for 60 days.  IL is easy - we just need a government issued ID (drivers license, passport, or state ID card).
  • I can't get mine yet, but will be looking up exact documents needed soon. In NJ, it's only valid for 30 days.

  • Can't you get a copy? I doubt either FI or I would find our original birth certificates, but we just go to our local health department and get one within 30 minutes. That's what we did for our passports.

  • FI has a copy, but he doesn't think they'll accept it because it doesn't have a raised seal. He's going to bring it by the clerk's office to find out for certain, but I'm not too hopeful. I wish we could just swing by the health department and pick up a copy, but FI was born in South Carolina, so that ain't happening!
