  For a wedding with a mass, there are many opportunities for a singer to sing! Many Catholic weddings have a soloist singer - most I've attended, in fact.
  
  Do you wish to ask her to be the sole singer for the entire ceremony, or are you hiring another soloist and just asking your friend to do one piece?
  
  If she will only be singing one piece, you could ask her to be the cantor for the psalm.
  
  Offertory and communion hymns, and the parts of the mass, can(should) also be sung. If your wedding includes some kind of signing ceremony (this is a little different everywhere, I think), that's another opportunity for music. But the best would be to ask her to sing the psalm, IMO.

  you could also ask her to do the prelude, as guests are arriving. can also be during communion or the reflection afterwards

  i believe at my mom's wedding her very good friend sang for the entire wedding.  my cousin had someone close to her sing only one song - the one she walked in to. 
  
  provided you can use your own soloist, and you arent obligated to use teh church's, she can sing as much or as little as you want her to.

  We had a musical interlude right after we did our vows.  It was a great time for H and me to whisper happy nothings to each other.  Our soloist also sang the gospel acclamation and the psalm verse.

  I had a friend (my MOHs sister in law) as cantor (and she is a cantor at a church),  my niece sang the Communion song, and another friend sang the Ave Maria.  All three regularly sing in church choirs as well.

  We did almost the same. One friend acted as cantor and sang the psalm and allelulia, and my best friend from high school sang right after our vows, when they sometimes the blessing of mary or whatever they call it (sorry I'm on cold medicine and a little foggy right now). We didn't do a full mass so no communion.

  We're having a good friend who is not Catholic sing two secular songs, plus another friend who is in the church choir sing any religious themed songs. My understanding that there are several opportunities for both during a regular Catholic mass, although my fiance is the expert, since he is also in the choir. He called one opportunity the "meditation song."
