What do I do about the pool?!

Hi all, I'm new here and hoping to get some ideas.

I'm having my wedding at a beautiful vineyard home. Guests will enter the backyard by first walking through an indoor pool area. The pool is awesome and I love it, but I want to use it for something. I'm just not sure what. The owner of the home said that we can float anything in it, so I'm just trying to brainstorm things to do.

After our ceremony and before the reception, our guests will be asked to hangout on the deck by the pool and enjoy appetizers. I was thinking that maybe we could float little boats in the pool that act as escort cards and have people fish them out with little nets that we make.

Do you think this is an interesting/fun idea? Of is it completely ridiculous and inconvenient?

Don't worry about hurting my feelings. I can handle criticism :) I just want to know what you would think if you showed up and a wedding and saw this.

Thanks!!!

  • I think floating old wooden sailboats would be cool but I think asking people to fish out their place cards could turn into a huge and messy comedy of errors.

You could do Japanese lanterns and float them in the pool -- those are lovely!

Yeah for sure.  People will get wet, someone might fall in.  I would avoid that.

You could float flowers or floating candles, or both.  Or you could float sailboats.  I think flowers and candles would be beautiful though.

  • Thanks! Yeah I'm thinking we'll probably do flowers and candles. I don't want anyone falling in! That would be a disaster.
  • Depending on the filtering system, I would check to make sure that there isn't a current of some sort in the pool that will make everything look strange.  I think flowers and candles will be beautiful, but not if they are all just massed together in a corner.

  • WOW!!!! We are also having a wedding reception near the pool and it never even crossed my mind to make decorations to put in the pool area That is awesome, I'm totally working that into my budget now!
  • The owner of the house said that most people anchor the pool candles/flowers somehow so that they don't all clump together. I could imgaine that would look bad if they were all being sucked into the filter.
  • I've been researching tents for my reception, and you would be AMAZED at how many people set up a tent right over their backyard inground pool!!  They make clear flooring that goes right over the pool.  I would imagine that you could just get the flooring, and not the tent...maybe set up one of those cool "lounge" areas that are becoming more popular?  Just search some tent rental places near you and look through their offerings and pictures and you'll see what I'm talking about!!

  • I'm going to be using a clear flooring over the pool for my reception, exacty like PP said :)  We're going to have lounge furniture surrounding the pool area.  We're going to use underwater uplighting in the pool, and the clear flooring will become the dance floor
  • Is your venue Pacific Oakes Vineyard in Aptos Califonia.  If so that is the venue my son and his fiancee has chosen for their July 2011wedding.

  • You can get submersible lights to sink to the bottom of the pool and have it light in your colors.  I have seen a monogram floating in a pool and honestly thought it looked a little dumb. The pool is probably beautiful enough on it's on that it doesn't need things floating around in it. And definitely doesn't need people fishing things out of it.
