My Dress. Just looking for opinions please. PIP XP

Hi Ladies.

My situation. Ordered my dress. Got it in. Didn't seem like the sample. Fabric seemed cheaper, color was lighter, beading seemed harsh, and cut into my arms when I wore it.

I have been told that the only way to fix it is to add a jacket, remove the beading, or cover the underarm of  the bodice with fabric. However, my seamstress feels that it may be more trouble than it seems to fix it.

My fiancee wanted to tank it and go look for another dress, so we went today.  The owner of that bridal shop informed me that she had heard that the designer of my dress, rather than raise their prices  had decided to cheapen their fabrics and beading on their gowns. It is her opinion that I got the first of their "updated" dresses, and that's why it seems more cheaply made. The first picture is my original dress. The second  was the dress we liked the best of the ones we could find that I could try on. Because of my wedding date, I have to decide by Friday whether or not I want to order a new dress. I was wondering if you guys would give me an opinion on which looks better on me?

TIA.

  • I really like the first one, but in the pic I cant tell that it is cheaply made. Go with whatever one you feel the most comfortable in, after all you will be in it all day.
  • I like the second one.  It makes your waist look smaller than the first one, and I think the sweetheart neckline is more flattering.

The pictures are rather small, but to be perfectly honest even at their small size I can see what you mean about the first. I'd look at it and think it was a cheaper dress. The second is more lovely on you.

More important though is you feeling 100% gorgeous in this dress, and it sounds like the first dress gives you more headache than anything else. I'm so sorry about this. Lucky you have enough time to select another, and you look great in it!

    This.

Also, would you mind sharing who the designer of the first dress is?  You might save some other brides from having this same issue if they know to avoid this designer.
  • I'm curious about the designer as well.  That surprises me.  I like the style of the first dress much better, but I think the sweetheart neckline looks nicer on you.  The first dress looks like it's wrinkled and needs a good steaming.  I can't tell about fabric quality and the pictures are pretty small.

Other than the neckline, I'm not really a fan of the second dress style, mostly because it reminds me of a dress I'd wear to a renaissance festival.  But, the cut is flattering on you. So, if you love it, and it's your style, that really is all that matters.  You have to feel fabulous in it, whichever one you choose.
  • The first dress is a Bonny from their unforgettable line. The sample was a lovely champagne/ivory color, and my "ivory" dress came in as a barely off white. The beading is so harsh and picky. It looks to me like they took the sample, and soaked it in bleach. I loved it when I tried it on, but am not sure about my dress. My friends liked the style of the first, but my fiancee' is unsure about what it would take to make it wearable. My seamstress is afraid that if she tries to remove/alter the beading from where it is scratching me, that the rest of the beading may unravel. I am at the bottom of the plus size, but it is still difficult to find actual samples to try on, and I am running out of time. I just wasn't sure about the looks of the second, and although I like it very much, most of my friends still prefer the first, which leaves me conflicted. I really appreciate the input ladies. Thank you so much.

You could have your seamstress add a layer of chiffon on top of the beading by your arms to keep it from scratching.

I wonder if you tried on in a champagne, but ordered an ivory?  If you decide you want to try more gowns on, consider a salon that carries Mori Lee Julietta line or Alfred Angelo. Both have plus size lines and they are very flattering, and pretty budget friendly.

<div>Do you have any more time between now and Friday to do additional shopping? It sounds like you aren't sold on either dress.</div>
  • Second dress is much more flattering. Really accentuates you and your body type and highlights your natural beauty.

  • I think the first dress flatters your figure much more.  The fabric comes to a point at the smallest part of your stomach.  Maybe the only thing I would add is a slight dip in the bust area.  But I wouldn't do a true sweetheart.

I agree with a PP that the 2nd dress looks more like a renaissance theme.  It looks like there are two separate pieces of the dress, and it just doesn't look right or flatters you IMO.
  • The picture is so small its hard to tell that the first one is cheaply made, If you are uncoftorble in it and budget allows get the one YOU like and feel the best in. You look beautiful in both
  • Even with the small pics, the quality difference between the two dresses is stark.  Second dress hands-down.  I should think that a seamstress could easily add the gathered waist feature in chiffon to the second dress as well.

  • agree that pics are small so its hard to see detail, but I think the first one looks lovely on you!  My concern would be that the designer changed fabric/beading instead of rasing the cost... the dress you tried on should have been what you got for the price the store sold it for.  That would piss me off, and i would say its stores respsonsibility to get you the dress you ordered with the correct fabric!  If the designer changes it after the fact, they shouldn't have anyone trying on the sample that will be a different dress when ordered.
