Backyard Wedding Ceremony Backdrop

Hey fellow Knotties,

FI and I are getting married in his parents backyard and I'm trying to come up with creative but affordable ways to decorate for our ceremony. I am going to have pictures and flowers lining the aisle, an idea I found on pinterest :) but am not sure what to do about the "alter" area. We haven't figured out the exact layout of the backyard for the wedding, waiting on RSVPs to figure out how many chairs we have to work with) but in all likelihood, we'll be standing in front of his garage door (his parents' garage opens on both sides) and I want to find someway to disguise that or at least decorate it. I'd considered renting an archway of some kind but we are on a tight budget and can't afford any of the ones I've found so far.

Any suggestions for decorations to disguise the garage door, or whatever part of the yard/house that ends up being our backdrop?

  • How much are the arches you're looking at? That would help us know your budget. The only thing I can think of is to get something like a Shoji screen. If you're handy at all, you could make a screen with some lattice and one by material. Put some bracing on it, load it up with some flowers, it'd be really pretty. I just looked it up and a piece of 4x8 lattice from the Lowe's near me (Oregon) is as cheap as $25.

The cheapest one I found was $50 but that was literally the most basic of all and I'd need to buy more flowers or tulle or something that would add to the cost...everything else was about $100.

I need to spend as little as possible basically. As we really don't have much in the budget for decorations, we focused the majority of the money we had on photography etc. I'm pretty creative but not so great at the execution unfortunately.

  • Layers of tolle in your wedding colors would made a pretty back drop and great for hiding the garage door.
  • I would suggest finding a pale shaded fabric that could be draped from the top of the garage down (I probably wouldn't use white because it could camoflage your dress, if your wearing white).  Then you could hang decorations down from the top of the fabric as well.  I'm linking to the esty.com Wedding Garland page, this can give you some great ideas of the decorations that you could hang from the top.  I'm sure most of these could be made by you for the cost of the products.

You could try to find an arch or a chuppah on craiglist and buy it used.   I bought a used bamboo chuppah, and then did a fabric backdrop made out of curtains I bought at Ikea.  I mostly did it to block out the sun, because I have very sensitive eyes, but it really helped with having a colorful backdrop that helped my white dress pop.  You could really do this with any sort of arch or canopy though, just to sort of hide the garage.

Here is a picture of the one we did. The chuppah was about $110 used (but these are about $400.00 new) and I spent about $20 on fabric.

  • One great idea is to use a pipe and drape kit for your ceremony.  They are super affordable and you can use any color drape to match your wedding theme!  Here is a great company we found online that we purchased our backdrop from.
