Having a party to celebrate an out of town wedding

My friend is getting married out of town at a plantation. they are having a small wedding with only family and very close friends. The Groom's mother wants to have a party in their home town for friends to come to in order to celebrate their wedding. People she wants to invite are people that are NOT invited to the wedding. My question: What do we call this party? and what is the appropriate way to explain to people "you're not invited to the wedding, but youre invited to our celebration party." The bride is worried it would be awkward or rude. Any help is appreciated!

  • Yeah, it will be awkward. For some reason, mothers think their friend's and neighbors care way more than they actually do. It's probably best to call it a BBQ and leave out the wedding elements.
