Scheduling around Memorial Day

Hey y'all,

So, my soon-to-be fiance and I have been looking at May 26th or 27th, 2012 for our wedding. (He's gotten my dad's blessing and bought the ring.) We both have school, graduations, and rotations (I'm in pharmacy school) to plan around.

We didn't realize that the last weekend of May was Memorial Day until my dad pointed it out. My dad seems to think that having the wedding on a holiday weekend would be a bad idea.

Meanwhile, I'm going back and forth between having the wedding at my church in Northern VA (BF is from NC), or in the city we went to school together in Northwestern PA (about a five hour drive from my house.) The latter option is more meaningful to both of us, and would have a much better setting for pictures. But we know it'd cost more and make attendance impossible for some of our guests, so we haven't decided yet.

My thought was, having a holiday on Monday would make travelling to PA easier on our guests.  I just don't have any idea how big of a problem it is to have one's wedding on a holiday weekend. Any thoughts or suggestions about the date? (Our other options are basically to move it back or forward a week, or do it later in the year.)

Re: Scheduling around Memorial Day

  • My sister got married Memorial Day weekend.  It was no big deal.  She sent out STDs six months ahead of time (not BEFORE THAT)

However, some people have long standing plans for Memorial Day weekend.  The same holds for July 4th and Labor Day.  Some people simply won't be able to make it.  But, that's true of any date.

I've also heard some peope really complain about Sunday weddings of three day weekends.  They travel Saturday and Monday and basically lose their entire weekend.  Again, that's some people's take on it.
  • I see nothing wrong with it either.  It may work out really well for your guests having a 3-day weekend and whatnot.
  • We contemplated this but ultimately decided against it.  Just remember that travel prices increase dramatically on holiday weekends.  So although you might think it's great for your out of town guests, it sometimes works against them because flights and hotels are more expensive.  Just something to think about.

I was married Memorial weekend in 2009.  I chose it because I was in nursing school and it was in another state so I wouldn't miss school.  Also we were married on the Sunday of Memorial weekend so we received some discounts from our vendors because it wasn't on a Saturday.  I also called around to hotels and got some really great group prices.

  • My FI's brother got married this Memorial Day weekend and there was so much traveling for a weekend.  The first ceremony was in northern NJ, close to NYC on Saturday morning.  The rehearsal for the Catholic ceremony was Saturday evening in Delaware.  We didn't have much choice but to take the route that folks use to go to the shore which made is a very long and stressful day.

  • I think that if you give people enough notice it should not be a problem.

FI and I are getting married the Sunday before Memorial Day this coming year.  Prices do go up, especially in our case as it's the first weekend of summer vacation for most schools, and we are getting married on the beach by the ocean.  We picked it because it's 5+ hours away from all his family and 1200+ miles away from all mine, so the 3 day weekend is a definite plus!  My family and his family each decided to rent a house for multiple family members (saves a ton of money over hotel rooms) and we're trying to save money by doing the reception at a hall at a state park.   I know the driving/flying will be crazy, but for long distances having a travel day on either side is a lifesaver.

Edit to add: we sent our save the dates out last month (7 months before) and hope to get things set enough to send invites by January to allow for trip planning.  100 postcard save the dates from Vistaprint was what we used (free, just pay shipping) and about $16 in postcard stamps and it was a done deal.
