Marriage License Tips

We just went to apply for our marriage license yesterday and I just wanted to share a couple tips for those of you who haven't applied yet.

-- Check with your town to find out what days/times they take applications. Our town only does them on Tues, Wed, Thurs, for 2 hour periods.

--I had printed out the application for the NJ website and filled it out to save time (but didn't sign it). They said they couldn't use that, and had to fill it out in front of us.. so don't waste your time doing that.

--Some towns would prefer that you pick up the certificate right away, others don't mind. Check with them. Our town told me not to pick it up until 2 days before the wedding.

This is great advice. I wish I had waited to pick it up closer to my wedding. if we have to postpone (weather), it will outside of the 30 day window. Hopefully hurricanes Katia and Lee will knock each other out! Lol Also, be sure to check for errors when you pick it up. I don't understand why it's so hard to type accurately, but this seems to be a common issue. We had FI's birthdate wrong. No biggie though.

I also wanted to suggest, checking before hand what type of payment they accept. My town would only accept Cash (exact change only), certified check or money order. No personal checks and no credit cards.

</div><div>This is also something you should check about with your town, rather than just not bothering...we filled it out beforehand and the woman was extremely grateful that we had done it ahead of time so she didn't have to fill it out for us and check on spelling of everything, etc.

Yeah, I didn't really understand why they couldn't accept it.. I hadn't signed anything, just filled in all of the information. But she wouldn't even look at it to copy everything, she asked us each question and made us answer as she wrote it down. In fact she wouldn't even give it back to me! She threw it out right there! very odd.
