PSA: No hotel blocks downtown 6/29-7/1

There's a huge volleyball tournament or convention downtown during this weekend so at this point, there is NO blocking available for any hotel downtown. I'm extremely frustruated by this because 90% of our guests are out of town now I feel like I'm going to have to provide a shuttle from a hotel that won't be anywhere in walking distance or cab ride to reception at COSI.   Plus we were hoping to have our younger guests (college friends) meet us at a bar in the arena district for an informal after party, but again, I feel bad if I were to ask people to cab it from downtown to german village, grove city or elsewhere....

  • You could rent transportation and have that for them, get the closest hotel and then pay for them to transport back and forth, I know bexley beat is pretty cheap, like 35 dollars an hour maybe!
  • I second tiffany's suggestion--I would contact Bexley Beat. I've heard they are great and very inexpensive.

If your guests are driving in from out of town and will have to pay to park at the hotel you probably should offer transportation to and from the wedding. I don't think you would want people to have to make a decision about driving after they've had too much to drink and they also should not have to pay to park at your venue even if they're not drinking.

  • As it is, we have 20 rooms in German Village, and 10 at the Doubletree across the river from COSI (which is probably where the bridal party and immediate family will stay).  The hotel in GV doesn't offer a shuttle but has free parking. Parking at COSI is $4, so it is still up in the air if we will cover it. I had a bad experience at another wedding where the reception was 20-30 mins away from the church, parking was scarce and ended up costing $15.  Then the hotel was 20 minutes in another direction!

I know there's a fine line between offering nothing (see above), and going out of our budget to accomodate everyone's individual transportation needs.  I figure if we at least cover something, whether it is shuttle or paid parking at venue, it will be better than nothing.
  • As the other girls suggested, I would splurge for the shuttle service from the hotel.  Bexley Beat is SO SO SO cheap even if you just used them for like 1-2 hours.  I'm sure your guests would much rather appreciate a free ride than having to worry about driving/cabbing.

  • I wiouldn't be offended if I had to take a taxi back from an after party.   After all, I chose to drink.  In fact, I have never attended a wedding where transportation was provided for the entire guest list.  (The only reason we were able to provide it for our guests is because we negotiated it with our hotel--and even then, it was only provided if they stayed at the hotel we had blocked.)

If everyone is staying at the same hotel, chances are there will be at least a couple of people who don't drink and can be DDs and the rest could split the cost of cabs.  I looked it up on fare finder and it should cost about $11 from the Arena District to German Village--which means everyone would pay about about $2 if they took a van.  I don't think that is too much to ask.

Paying for parking at the venue would definitely be nice though.

  • Ditto what everyone else said regarding Bexley Beat.  It could actually end up being cheaper than paying for people to park, and also worth the peace of mind.  Plus, that area can be a PITA to navigate when there's an event going on (like a tournament/convention), especially for OOT guests.  Not to mention, one wrong turn and someone could be lost in a not-so-good area of town.

I personally have never been to an OOT wedding where there wasn't some kind of shuttle/transportation provided to/from the hotel.

  •  This vollebyall tournament is a huge deal, it was really a big deal for Columbus to be chosen. I can't remember the expected attendance but I think it's in the 20,000 range but most or all will be high school age with adults chaperoning which should mean you won't have problems at the bars since they wouldn't be of age.  I may be wrong about both the attendance number and age group but think that's what I read when it was announced several months ago.
  • http://usavolleyball.org/news/2011/07/21/columbus-to-host-2012-usav-girls-junior-nationals/43663 Actually it is 20,000 spectators and 9500 athletes.  Age range for competitors is 12 to 18.

None of this helps your situtation, just explains a bit about what it is though.
