Difference between California (Los Angeles County) Marriage License and Marriage Certificate? And ho

What is the difference between a Los Angeles Marriage License and Marriage Certificate? I noticed that the license has information in regards to parents information; occupation, etc...is this information also on the certificate that is mailed back?

Also, what is the process for doing the marriage license online? Do we just fill it out and pick it up without waiting at the recorder office?

Thanks!

The license is what you fill out. You fill out the form, they give you a license to wed, your officiant signs it and mails it back. THEN they mail you a marriage certificate, which is the proof of marriage. You need that certificate to change your name, add your spouse to health insurance, etc.

Unfortunately, filling out the license online does not save you from having to wait at the office!

Filling it out online might speed things up a bit, in that the clerk doesn't have to type in your info, once you get to them. But you still have to go wait in line. Really, the time with the clerk was the least of our time there. We went to the Van Nuys branch on a Friday afternoon and it was terrible- waited 2.5 hours. Of course, that may be the worst time to go. But either way, bring a book or something and be prepared for a wait!
