photo ideas

i spoke to a friend of mine and she advised that i have some poses in mind to tell the photographer exactly what i want and don't want. i have no idea where to come up with ideas for what to tell her. how did you ladies figure it out? i know i like silhouettes against the sunset but i don't really know what else.

i also know that i want our photos to be more relaxed than posed, but i'm worried that candids will all come out terribly. any advice would be greatly appreciated! TIA!

Re: photo ideas

  • Many of us have ideas in our bios...we also just did searches on google or looked at others pics and built ours..I also want more candid..but there are a few I really want.

  • I have a few ideas of things I want - sunset beach photos of FI and I, a group shot of everyone at the wedding taken from some higher ground so you can see the whole group, that kind of stuff.  But I've looked at tons of photos by the photographer we selected, and she has a pretty clear style (that I adore), so I'm going to leave most of it in her hands.

I think if you like the look of the photos your photographer takes (and you see similarities in the types of photos he/she takes from wedding to wedding), you probably have less to worry about.
  • Some people want the classic pose of the bride looking over her shoulder (shows off the train of the wedding dress), some people like the holding the bouquet behind the back (shows off the tie-up back or train/bustle detail), some want photos of them kissing, or foreheads touching.

As a photographer I always advise bride to come up with a "must have" photo list - write down relatives you want photos with (VERY IMPORTANT!), groups of family, wedding party, and also any fun or specific poses.  Like the wedding party jumping up in the air photo that lots of people like, or a specific portrait pose.

As others advised, look through other bride's photo shoot or look at photographer's portfolios to see what you like and don't like.  Have a friend take pics of you or practice with your cell phone in front of a mirror so you can find your best angle.  Not every photographer has had a fine arts training and/or will know how to pose you so that you look your best... keep that in mind.

Communicate with your photographer-- give them your "must have" list a few weeks ahead of time and then make sure they have looked it over just in case there are any questions.   If you are like me and will not be able to meet with your photog before the day of the wedding, this is ESPECIALLY important. This will save you lots of time (and headaches!) on your wedding day when it's photo time!
You'll only have so much time for pictures so the more organized you and your photog are, the better.  Many photogs will ask you for a list of your "must have"s - if they don't be proactive and give it to them anyways.

  • I am trying to pull out photos that my photog has taken before that I like, or want similar photos to...  I like my photog's style and want him to do most of the selecting, but there are some photos that I would like to have - or something similar.  I just figured it was easier to start with his own photos and work from there...
  • My photographer sent me a list of must-take photos and we also sent her photos of things we found online that we like. Not just poses but the feel and look of the picture. She loved our ideas and understood what we are aiming for. Like PP states, google some pictures and send the pictures to your photographer (put mine in a word document for easier viewing) and let them see what you are evisioning :-)
