Fasting for the Wedding?

Hi all!  So my big day is next week and the FI and I are considering fasting for the wedding!  Has anyone else done this or heard of it?  I have never fasted before so this will be a big step!

Hey! My FI and I just fasted for just under a month for other reasons but I highly recommend it. The fast we did was the daniel fast- it restricts your diet to cut out sugar, dairy, meat and several other things but allows you to eat whatever else you want. I loved it because esp compared to other fasts, I felt I was treating my body as the temple God created it to be by being healthier than normal. It also really helped us to see all the junk that is in the food we eat normally and taught us to be aware of what we put in our bodies. It also still gives you energy to do what you need in the crazy week before the wedding.

Things to think about as you consider to fast however: 1. (and most important) Is it what you feel God is calling you to do? 2. Could it potentially make your dress not fit last minute? Not as important but a very real possibility. 3. Will you have the energy to love the people around you while on a fast and doing last minute prep for the wedding? 4. Is whatever way you are fasting pleasing and honoring first to God and then your to-be husband? Keep in mind honoring your husband is honoring God.

If all of these check out OK, then  I would say go for it! But don't be afraid to pray about it again if you start being a bad witness! :-)

Good luck and God bless on your wedding!

    Wow...time sure flies huh?

Yeah. My sister fasted for her wedding and I plan on doing the same. Its basically just seeking the Lord's face to make sure all goes well and to make sure I am indeed on the path God has set for me. As my mom would say "pray that if this is God's will, it will work and if it isn't God's will, it will walk".

Hmm, I never heard of it, but it could work!  I know that in the Orthodox Christian tradition, the period leading up to the wedding is a reflective time and focused on renewal.  I know couples are encouraged to go to confession beforehand.  I think fasting could be a part of that, as long as the goal is grow closer to God.  I don't know if my fiance and I would do that, as I have too many health problems.  What has your pastor said about it?

We haven't talked to the pastor about it yet.  My FI actually brought it up!  I hadn't even thought about the dress idea - thanks - the good thing is my dress has a corset back so it should work either way.

I want this time to be reflective and focused on God's will for us.  I am starting to feel a little nervous about starting this chapter in my life all of a sudden.  This morning I just woke up with a heavy heart cause all the vendors are calling asking me twenty questions -   I think it will be good.  I have been googling the Daniel's fast to see if its one we could do.  I am thinking we would make whatever we choose to do a personal fast until our family comes into town 2 days before.....

    It's a beautiful idea.

However, some food for thought: Not sure when you are considering fasting, but I would not fast right before the wedding, but maybe a few weeks before. That week is so busy and stressful, you need all the nourishment and energy you can get. (Just coming off those last weeks, that my my suggestion).

My friend and her husband fasted prior to their wedding but I don't think it was the week before. Either way I think it is a wonderful idea and if God placed it on your FI's heart as something for the 2 of you to do I say go for it. I believe that great things come when God's people fast. God does nothing by mistake so he may be calling you two to fast for a specific purpose. Somethings don't come through just praying.

I would encourage you to pray about not only when but what and how to fast. The Daniel's fast is a good one and there are so many other options as well. You could fast until a certain time each day or you could just give up sweets or something that you love.

Whatever you and your FI decide I pray that God blesses your marriage!!

Hmmmm.....I had not thought about doing this, but will approach FI about it tomorrow.  Seeking God is something we both strive and we incorporate devotional and prayer into our nightly phonecalls.  I am looking forward to fasting and praying with FI before the wedding!  I am sure it will help us stay centered!  Thank you!

I too think it is a great idea however, I think you should not do it the week of your wedding. But take it to the Lord in prayer and He will order your steps
