Dying my Crinoline

I've always LOVED the look of a coloured crinoline and have been going back and forth with it since I got my dress.  I've decided that I definitely want to do it, but now I'm stuck.

Everyone recommends RIT dye for doing it, as it tends to have the brightest and most even results.  However, to do it you need to use a washing machine.

What's the problem??  I have a front-loading HE washing machine.  A brand-new, $1,600, front-loading washing machine.  That I'm pretty sure a certain, soon-to-be Mr. would NOT appreciate my using to dye my crinoline.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how else I could do this?  Do you think a laundry mat would have a problem with it?  FMIL has a front-loader too that I'm sure she doesn't want me using for dying, and my mum uses ours to do her wash.  The dye doesn't stain the inside of the washer, but so many people don't trust that for some reason?

Do you think we could use the bath tub??  Which is plastic and would probably get dyed?  Anyone want to dye my crinoline for me?? haha

Help!?!?

  • I've always dyed things in a 5 gallon bucket.

Just because you saw it on Four Weddings, doesn't mean it's a good idea.
  • Do you think this method would work in a tub in my bathtub??  We don't have a laundry sink in our apartment.  I might be able to cover the bathtub with layers of tarp and then put a large tub inside to dye the crinny?

  • I'm gonna have to take a trip to Target to see how big a 5-gallon bucket is.  I am terrible with measurements haha!  I have a fit & flare slip, so nothing too big & poofy, but I still want to make sure that the whole thing is submerged.
  • Okay so apparently I just didn't search long enough.  I think this is the method I'm going to use (posting here for anyone with a similar question).  I'll probably do this in the next few weeks, so look for pics haha :)

"I just dyed mine using the fuschia Rit dye and it turned out just lovely!! Took about 15 minutes. I didn’t use the washing machine however b/c I have a front loading machine and it’s also an high efficiency so it doesn’t fill up with water before you can add clothes. I used a big Rubbermaid storage bin, filled it half way with hot water, carried it to the front porch then carried more hot water in buckets out to finish filling. Added the mixture of Rid and hot water to it then popped that crinoline in and stirred it with a skinny piece of PVC piping that we had lying around. It doesn’t show under the dress!"

  • I'd get one of those big giant plastic tubs. You know, the kind you use to store things in in your attic/basement?

This is 18 galloons. Plenty large enough. And it you can't get the dye out? No big deal- just chuck it. A few dollars down the drain is better than ruining your washer or bathtub. I wouldn't risk that. (That link is a set of 8- I'm sure you can just buy 1 for like 5 bucks)

  • a 5 gallon bucket is the regular round bucket.  It's plenty big enough.  The problem you'll run in to with the big rubbermaid tub is you'll need more dye for the water:dye ratio.  A bucket is like $5

  • I have one of those buckets and I think it might be too small for the crinny :(  RIT's website says to use more water for a more even tone, so I think having a bigger "basin" would be a good idea.  I don't mind using more dye- it's only $3.99 a bottle :)
  • I really wanted to do this, but I have a tulle skirt on my dress and I'm wearing a hoop not a crinoline. Post pictures for us when you're done!!!

  • I dyed mine yellow and I used the 5 Gallon bucket and a whole bottle of RIT. I had to do the process twice to get the correct color yellow. The first time it just looked dingy the second time made it a nice hue of yellow, not too bright but not too pale. I would just keep watching it and if it is too bright when done a couple of washes will probably dull it down. Good luck!

  • Thanks for the advice Alyssa!  I am really afraid of the colour not coming out right.  I'm trying for colour 565 in their colour guide (on the blue-green tab of this website if you care to look) and I'm really afraid of it not working out.  Good to know that a second attempt brightened it up!  Also good to know that a 5-gallon bucket worked.

To everyone else, I'll definitely post pictures!  I'll probably wait until the cold front we're in goes away since I'll be tackling this project outside and don't want to sit out there in the snow, stirring a tub of hot water, dye, and my crinny for 30+ minutes :)
  • What about contacting a local college with an art department and asking if they have a washer they use for fabrics/dye?  I went to Elon Unviersity in NC and we had classes that dyed fabric and we had a special washer just for the dye...you are right, it was so stained!
