Nevada-Las Vegas

Flying with my dress or shipping it out

I'm having an internal debate about getting my dress to Vegas. I hate to have it out of my hands, so I'm thinking of cramming it in my carry-on (it's a short dress, no train).  I don't trust it in my regular luggage.

One of the groomsmen lives in Vegas, so I could easily ship it out to him, but we're already doing that with our broom (to jump the broom), and I hate to hassle him too much. Plus, it could get lost in shipping too.

Maybe I'll wear the dang thing on the plane and be done with it.

Oh, and yes, I'm obsessing about this 14 months ahead of time. But this is my slow month at work and I've scheduled wedding related obsessions for this time. I'll be swamped from March through next January, so I need to get a lot of things decided early to keep my stress down.

And it doesn't help that I've never flown. Hopefully I feel better about this after we go to Vegas in March to scout!

  • I drove with my dress layed out across the back seat over all our lighting equipment, suitcases, etc. I dropped it off with Debbie the next day to be delivered the day of the wedding.

I've heard many brides shipping it out to her ahead of time, she'll let you know when it arrives. If you're planning on having it steamed, it make sense to do this.  Just ship it, insure it, and track the shipping.
  • My wife brought it on the plane.  Her dress was fairly large, even bundled up, so we bought an extra seat for her to put it in as there was no chance it would fit in a closet even if there was one available.  It was cheaper to buy the seat than it would have been to ship it once insurance was factored in,a nd she found it a lot less stressful to have it next to her than wonder if it was being destroyed by some shipping depot in Memphis.

  • I carried my dress. I brought some candy for the flight attendants and they gave me a whole overhead bin for my dress. I dropped it off at Fit for a Bride (Debi) to be steamed before the wedding, so I wasn't scared of it getting wrinkled while carrying it around. It was a bit of a pain, but it wasn't a huge deal. And even if I didn't get a whole bin to myself, I would have just rolled it up and put it by my carryon.
  • I'm rolling my up and putting it in a carry-on.  I am a control freak and want it in my possession/sight at all times until we get there :)
  • I carried my dress on the plane. The flight we were on wasn't really full so we had an extra seat in between us and I just put it there and fastened it in. LOL.  Otherwise I would have laid it across the luggage in the overhead bin.  I had it steamed at I & A Formal Wear (Debi was a bit pricey IMO) the day before the wedding.  It wasn't a big deal, H didn't have any carry ons so he just carried it through the airport and when we got to the hotel I hung it up.
  • I plan to carry mine on with me.  I am too nervous to ship, especially since I just recently had issues with a shipment.

    THIS.

I'm way too paranoid.  Plus, my dress is short so it won't be such a burden to haul on the flight next week.

    NEXT WEEK????? *passes out*

EDIT:  I should also add that I am so paranoid that I am carrying everything wedding outfit-related on the plane with me as I am also afraid of lost baggage.  Essentially, I'm carrying everything except make-up so I can get by if something happens.  FI is also carrying his suit, shoes, etc.

  • I shipped mine but I was overseas and already up to the tip of my hair in luggage. I trust FedEx, the dress made it to Debi safe and sound. After the wedding I shipped it to her again to have it steamed, all went well both ways. To be fair, if hubby and I decide to go back to Vegas for our first anniversary and have a Rock the Dress photo shoot, I won't be shipping it again, since it's kind of expensive. Despite the fact that my dress has a 10 ft long train, it fits in a small bag once folded.
  • Glad to see I'm not the only one who doesn't want the dress out of my posession! I know I'll feel better with it in my carry-on, so I think I'm gonna plan on that.

Unless, that is, my dad actually goes through with his plan to drive out (from Wisconsin, yikes!). Then I'll send it with him. He and my mom drive to California every few years, so they just might do it. That would work awesome for me!

    Thanks guys!

  • Ive recently bought new luggage for our trip from UK to Las vegas in May, I'm planning on putting my dress in my Carry-on.

The lady from the wedding shop has said that if I take my bag into the shop that they will pack it correctly into the bag for me, ensuring minimal creasing. Hopefully when we get there any creases will drop out when the dress is hung up in the bathroom.

Another hint they gave me was to take an old single quilt/duvet cover to hang your dress in so you other half couldnt see it, then you can just leave the cover there.

I too am glad to see that Im not the only person that does not want the dress out of my possesion!! thought I was going a bit crazy. lol

I'm totally in the same boat.  One suitcase for all wedding day-of items, one for other essentials, and the rest are getting checked.  I've had my luggage lost too many times to risk it!
  • I bought candy (in bags) and put in cute gift bags and gave to the pilot and captain when they were boarding the plane first. They hung my dress in the cockpit.  I flew Southwest.
  • I am flying from the UK I am purchasing  a box that is made to the exact airline carry on requirements, my bridal store will pack it for me and Debbie will be steaming it at the other end....It was way too expensive to ship with insurance from here.

  • For all of you that made it onto the plane with the dress as a carryon... How did you get it through security?? If it's not folded up into a small bag, I don't see security letting me through with mine...
