Guerrilla Wedding??

Has anyone ever attended a guerrilla wedding? For those who have never heard of this, it is when a small group of people converge on a space at a certain time and perfom a quick wedding without permits etc... Would anyone consider doing this? Or is that a bad idea?

No, I wouldn't consider doing this. Sounds like a logistical nightmare. Additionally, where would you do this? Subway train? McDonald's? Middle of Times Square?

Well, I suppose you could do it anywhere. When I googled the phrase, most of the places that popped up were in NYC. Obviously, one would have to forego many things that a normal wedding would have (chairs etc.) and the reception would be at another site. Places it has taken place would include, parks, museums, rooftops, secluded gardens etc..

Just curious what you guys thought.

I admit that I'm fairly traditional and I would never be a fan of something like this.

However, may I ask why you would want to do this? What are the advantages?

I think it would be really cool, but if you have any more than a half dozen people or so (including you and the officiant), you risk drawing attention you don't want and getting kicked out. In most cases, you'll need to forego traditional wedding attire.

You would also have to keep it SHORT. My friends in Disneyland security have seen a lot of guerilla weddings, and depending on how discreet and out-of-the-way the group is, they get about 10-15 minutes before they're ejected with their admission revoked, no refunds.

If there's somewhere you've always wanted to get married where you could never afford or be permitted to hold the ceremony, and if you're willing to make the necessary concessions to avoid having security break things up (I don't know about you, but that's not how I want to remember my wedding day), then cool! But it's a lot trickier than it sounds.

Not to be a downer, but I don't love it... But it's also SO not my style. (I'm really trying for traditional with some fun twists... like sneakers instead of shoes type thing) With the unwedding wedding line... I'm seeing Alice at the tea party, an un-birthday party. I'm sure its fun... but i think it kind of misses the mark.

I think with the right people, it could be a lot of fun and very nontraditional. I've only been to one, and it was a blast! Not only was it really intimate, but you also have to be fast and get to the reception. I enjoyed it and so did the other guests.

I actually saw one of these... It took place at the end of an unofficial Halloween parade. The groom was dressed in a ripped tux with green face paint and the bride had a bloodied white dress. It was a zombie wedding! We saw a bunch of people in a crowd when the parade was over, and asked, "What's going on?" and someone told us that a couple was getting married. It was very unofficial, small, and random, but I think if you're into that sort of thing, it's awesome. I myself, would want some good photos taken.

Thanks for all of the replies! I just wanted to see how prevalent this idea was. I myself am not going to do this since I am already knee deep in the planning and have always imagined my wedding going a more traditional route.

I think it would be great. Fun, random, unique, memorable. A great story for anyone who was there. In a different circumstance, I could see myself really considering it. :-)

For a young, adventurous crowd, I'm sure it would be quite fun. But for others it sounds like total chaos that might easily be seen as mocking the solemnity of the vows.

If you want your parents and grandparents there at your ceremony, are you sure they could keep up?

Catwoman708: Why is all the fun stuff only for the young? I could have totally seen DH and I doing this (I'm in my 50s), if he hadn't really wanted a beach wedding. Just quit on the age discrimination, OK?

My mom did this when she got remarried. We went to the local metroparks, did our thing, then left the for reception. It was a little awkward, because one person didn't figure out there was a wedding going on and walked her baby right through the crowd of peopke (and right in front of the camera!) instead of going around. But other than that one person, it wasn't that big of a deal.
