Reception foods

I am getting married on December 14th, 2013. And I am having an issue about food choices for the reception. I will be having an evening wedding, but not sure if I want to have the expense of the entire dinner tray. Would dessert foods or like finger foods be better choice in terms of price?...

Re: Reception foods

  • If your wedding starts prior to 8 pm you need to feed them an entire dinner, or very hearty, substantial apps that equal a meal.  If you want to do desserts/finger foods 2 pm or 8pm are good start times.
  • Ditto kmmssg, if your reception crosses a meal time, you need enough food to equate a meal.  Especially during the holidays, when everything is a little more formal and is ramped up a notch.  If you want to serve only light appetizers and cake and punch, then have your wedding at 2PM.  If you want an evening wedding, you need to serve a meal. Some people think that an 8P ceremony can get away without serving a meal, but I personally think anything that starts after 3PM needs a meal, especially during the holidays.
  • I would day that if the ceremony is at 8:00 pm or later, dessert and apps would be fine.  Any earlier than that, and I would serve a meal.
  • If your wedding time is later in the evening it's totally acceptable to have some apps and a dessert bar. I'd have a little of both if you can swing it because some people want one or the other (or both).
  • You can do hors d'oeuvres, but you'll need enough to constitute a meal, which is something like 15-20 substantial pieces per person. This is often as expensive or MORE expensive than a traditional meal.
