Getting in Shape

That time of the Month!

I had been doing really well with the Diet and the exercise... But now, its "that time of the month" and i have no energy, i am craving all sorts of things and i am having a really rough time keeping to my routine. Any hints on how to get through this next few days without undoing everything I have accomplished in the past 3 weeks?

Re: That time of the Month!

  • Honestly?  My best advice is to stop thinking about it and just do it.  Get to the gym.  Remind yourself that you'll regret it if you don't go, but you won't regret it if you do.

Also?  A couple days won't undo everything  you've done unless you let it continue past a couple days.  If you REALLY feel like you need to take a couple days off, then do it.  But get back to it as soon as you feel better.

  • I agree with pp. When I need that stuff, I give in to it because any thin and fit person does. But I never ever ever let it derail my workouts. If I miss one, I make it up. And you know what? I lost 24 pounds in like 4 months doing that. So eat some chocolate -- it'll keep you sane!

I read somewhere that the craving for chocolate is a magnesium deficiency, and your body is instinctively trying to guide you to the tastiest source for magnesium.  Try chocolate coated almonds to see if that will help.

I've found that if I let myself eat about 100-200 more calories during that time of the month, and work my cravings into my meals, I do much, much better.  Though we are on a budget, I splurge for some lean red meat at the grocery and make that up with brown rice and a glass of wine, with a chocolate fat free pudding cup for dessert, and I'm a happy camper.  Or, we have taco night with lean beef and whole wheat tortillas if I find I'm craving sodium.

  • Yes, Lobsters25!! I do that 100-200 calorie trick too. I try to make it protein, but sometimes it's chocolate chips on a tablespoon of peanut butter. You're totally right about that, and good ideas, too!

  • I've found that drinking extra water and making sure to get my excercise in during that time, I actually tend to feel better. By no means does this mean that it doesn't take some extra motivation to get there. Also, I've found that when it comes to cravings I have to endulge myself but in moderation or else I'll find myself knee deep in a chocolate cake a few weeks later. The key for cravings I feel is to do it in moderation and be aware that you are doing it.

  • I was on mine last week. I also have been dieting/exercise for about 3 weeks. Im trying to lose about 40 pounds before I go dress shopping in August, which is about 5 pounds a month. All I wanted last week was chocolate and to not go to the gym. I made it to the gym 3 times last week, when I have been trying to go 5 days. I was slightly disappointed in myself, but I didnt let it get me off track, I went back to 5 times this week. I also bought the little fun size chocolate bars. I would let myself have 1 or 2 and it definitely satisfied the craving, with really less then 100 calories. Hang in there and have a piece of chocolate!

  • I agree with J&K that just making yourself go to the gym is a good idea. I find that I actually run better on the first day of my period (and the day before it starts). I think it has something to do with the big drop in progesterone that accompanies menstruation. Several of my PRs have been set while I was on my period. My worst workouts are during the two weeks between ovulation and menstruation. Had one this morning. Bleh.

So even if you feel lousy enough to want to skip the gym--go anyway! You may be surprised how you feel once you get going.
  • that time of the month is a struggle.  more than other days.  that's for sure.  just keep up with the water.  and i always try to eat more iron.  i don't know if that actually helps.  but a lot of being healthy is in your head!  keep the thoughts positive.

snack on a little bit of lowfat popcorn or a square of chocolate.

my favourite dessert when i am DESPERATE for something sweet is some fruit dipped in melted chocolate.  not 100% healthy.  but it's just as satisfying as a brownie in my opinion.  i'm a big chocolate lover.

my other tip is share!  everything is about moderation right?  so if you're craving those french fries, get a small and share.  you can't deny yourself cause then you'll binge (well, i will anyway).  keep portions small and make more healthy decisions than unhealthy ones.

  • I am glad to read this post. I have a rough time with fatigue this time of the month, and nothing seems to help. I give myself a little break with the working out for the week and try to do my best with diet, but I get right back to my routine once my energy is back! I want to lose 5 lbs before March 15th so that will mean no cheating!
