Pre-interview

After applying for 10ish jobs within the University (I have to stay to keep my tuition next to free) I finally got a "pre" interview. She'll call me tomorrow for a brief phone interview to see if she'd like to bring me in for a real interview.

Im only excited b/c everyone applies for jobs within SU so just to get an interview is really hard!

Haha yeah. Leave it to me to burp while Im making the appt with her. Not like a loud obnoxious one or anything, but like the little puff of air. I was cursing myself in my head. Damn soda addiction.

Good luck!  University jobs are so competitive for some reason!

Its actually with good reason that theyre competitive. If you have kids that are nearing college age...they have a list of like 1000ish schools they can attend tuition free. If you're like me and wanting to return to school...free-ish (I pay taxes on the tuition). And you figure people with kids and people who want to go to school make up one hell of a chunck of the population. Unfortunately thats what Im competing with :/

Ive actually had a good amount of jobs in my life and Ive only been rejected by 2 after an interview...both from SU. The first is my current job who rejected me, hired someone else, fired her within a month, then hired me. The 2nd was the first of these past 10ish jobs that Ive applied to trying to get outta this position.

Good point re: tuition.  I work at a university currently, but I'm not interested in taking courses at the moment, so I never think about that aspect.

Yeah, see thats the only reason Im here. I actually liked my retail jobs, but had given up my assoc. manager position at Charlotte Russe when I moved to Philly for a few months b/c the closest was 45 min away. So i ended up at Starbucks and I didnt see myself there for long. If I could get the store manager position at Charlotte or a similar store, Id very much consider dropping school....except that I spoiled myself with 9-5 and Im not sure I could go back to random hours.

Oh life how I hate you for making things so complicated

I feel your pain, I'm applying to two univeristies right now and it's tough! I was super excited to get an interview for a part-time position. Even though it's only 20 hours, I still have a phone interview, a 1st round interview with 5 poeple, and a second round interview with 4 different people to get through! Talk about competitive!

Retail store managers actually make a good salary, so it may not be such a bad idea to go back to it if you liked it.

Ok so I think that went well. I got super tounge-tied at one point when she asked what i do at my current position and I just laughed it off and apologized. But it sounds like such a good fit for me so Im prayin hard!

Funny though, she tells me she'll call me in a week or 2 to let me know if I got the face to face interview....which is held in HR which is the office across from mine. I know how "professional" the people here are so that could get awkward.

But heres to praying I get the next interview!

Yay! I'm glad it went well. Good luck on getting an interview. 2 weeks is a long time to wait.

    Thank You!

Yeah it is, but its really the way the University works. A coworker of mine that Im pretty close with had to do interviews for a position in our office and gave me the whole scoop on the process and WOW! After the phone interviews she does, she has to give HR a form for each person with the reason she does not want to hire them. Then she'll do the face to face and then another set of forms as to why people are a no-go. After that she needs to submit the hiring paperwork to HR and wait for them to respond with whether or not THEY are ok-ing the person. Its a biotch and a lengthy process.
