Wedding in a forest?

Hey Ladies,
My FI recently sprang on me that he wasn't sure about our "in town" wedding plans (nothing has been officially planned yet) and he thinks we'd be better off getting married in a forest or a field.  While I agree that it is more "us," I am worried about some logistics.  He thinks everyone will just camp out, but we know for sure that some of our guests won't want to.  I am also worried about the lack of electricity in the forest...but he points out we can just use a wireless portable ipod dock and don't need electricity otherwise.

Does anyone have experience with outdoor weddings that are away from home?  I'd love to hear how it all worked out.  I know we'll have a laid back wedding regardless of the venue, but I do intend to wear a white dress and expect him in a suit.  I've seen enough pictures to make me realize I could love the idea, but I'm worried about the logistics.  Thanks!!

Re: Wedding in a forest?

  • My aunt and uncle had their ceremony at a very woodsy county park around Appleton, it was beautiful. We went to a different location for the reception after. Would that work out for you, it would be a lot easier at least! I can't imagine trying to cater food in the middle of nowhere, especially with no electricity. If you did it this way you would really only have to rent chairs for the ceremony (wouldn't really need decor with all of the trees).

Otherwise you could try to rent out a few campsites in the Kettle Moraine area, it;s so pretty out there. I know at the Mauthe lake campground we rented 3 sites and all stayed there as a family, it was a lot of room and worked out nice, I'm not sure how they would be about noise restrictions though.

I had always thought about getting married in a woodsy area, since we have so many beautiful areas around here. I would definitely move the reception to somewhere indoors though for logistics, and it would be nice in case the weather isn't going according to plan.

I would definitely plan the wedding for Fall too, it would be gorgeous!
  • There were a lot of people who camped at my brother's wedding. Those that didn't camp jumped on a shuttle at the end of the night. Those who did stayed and were still up at dawn having a great time :) If you're into camping, I'd say go for it.

Generators are also an option, the quieter ones cost more to rent though.
  • I think there are definitely ways to do it that would work, and you could also probably meet half way. There are a lot of super rustic venues that still have bathrooms and some electricity, but would be in the middle of nowhere and have the same feel. That way you can still have everything you want and that sense of isolation. Guests that don't want to camp can always stay in nearby hotels...

I don't know your area but you might want to try your local board to see if the gals on there have any ideas...I know some places near me that come to mind and I bet there are some near you too. Good Luck, it sounds like the makings of a beautiful wedding!

  • I'm having my wedding in the woods with camping as an option. The park is 45 minutes from the city, and people that aren't camping will be returning to the city after the reception to stay there. I've also been to a wedding like this before and it was even farther away. Basically, the people that didn't want to camp left early.

As far as power, we're using a portable docking system and I believe our friends used a small generator. After dark people just gathered around the fire for light.

  • Thanks ladies!  You've made me feel like I have a few other options.  Jessica, you said exactly what I wanted to hear!  We haven't picked a park yet, but it would probably be closer to town than 45 miles.  My FI has a lot of land in his family that I'm sure we could use, but it is 4 hours away from where we live and I'd like to stick closer to home.

    Thanks!
  • Where do you live? I live in the Fond du Lac area and know quite a few woodsy places around here.
  • @Brit: I'm in Madison.  I'm thinking about Lake Kegonsa Park or New Glarus State Park.  Both have wetlands...I have a thing for wetlands.  Kettle Moraine has nice wetlands too.

My latest idea is a sunrise wedding in the wetlands.  Well, not IN the wetlands, but on the boardwalk or something.  Just an idea....
  • The boardwalk idea would be gorgeous!! I'm not familiar with those areas, another idea could be the Horicon Marsh, they're are so many gorgeous places out there! I love New Glarus though, FI and I plan to go there to take a tour of the brewery sometime soonish, I was there when I was like 14 lol.

Don't you just love Wisconsin, so many pretty outdoorsy places! I love it!
