Starting Over

This is my "I am starting over" accountability.  I have been doing very good at maintaining my weight considering I have not worked out or ate the healthiest over the last month (or two).  I gave up everything because I was getting so frusterated at only being able to run/walk because of my wrist issue.

Long story short I did something to my wrist back in late Nov/Dec and was told several times that it was just a sever sprain.  It wasn't getting better and afer having to wait until last month to get into any ortho appointment to get one MRI and then having to wait until last week to finally get into see a hand specialist and another MRI it turns out that I have a slight tear in my flexor tendon.  So now I am in another splint for a good month to see if that will help to avoid surgery.

Starting today I am going to get back on track with eating healthy foods and excercising.  This has been a comittment that I have made to my self along time ago and I will not let the 56lb weight loss come back.

Does anyone know any good ab excersices that you don't have to use your hands/upperbody strength?

Re: Starting Over

  • Hey Firefly!  First, congrats on starting over.

I have wrist issues too.  I've had two different injuries to the same wrist in my lifetime, and now have arthritis at the ripe old age of 32.  Last year my doc told me that for the rest of my life, I shouldn't do any movement that causes me to bare weight on a flat palm.  Even things like pushing open a door I use a closed fist (or my other hand) for.

Soooo, like you, it was challenging at first to figure out what the heck to do.  My physical therapist encouraged me just to modify things.  Like, for instance, planks are awesome for abs.  I do them on my elbows instead.  Some people will tell you this is equally as challenging as on your hands.  I can do side ones too, just on my elbows.

Are you doing any cardio?  I was doing zumba for awhile with my splint on.  And there's a woman in my spin class who has her hand/wrist in a cast.  She doesn't do everything quite as fast as the rest of us, but she's still able to get a good workout.

If you take classes or go to a gym, the instructor should be able & willing to give you modifications on exercises.  Just show up a few minutes later & explain your limitations.  I've done this, and it's really helped out.

Good luck to you.  Wrist injuries are really challenging but don't let it stop your progress!!
  • Thanks for the info!

I actually don't have a gym membership anymore.  My year was up in March and I didn't renew it because of all the wedding expenses.

I will look into getting a trainer for my spin bike for the house.  I never thought about that.  What other types of excercises do you do that work?
