So I have my reception venue booked but am torn on whether or not to do buffet or plated meals. My sister works at the restaurant that we're having our reception and says the buffets are really nice there. I know it's cheaper (and of course we're on a budget) but I've always been iffy about a buffet. Does it look as nice to do buffet? Help!

The truth behind a well laced dress
The truth behind a well laced dress
I recently attended another hotel wedding that was very fancy and the food was served family style and I really liked it.

The cost difference will depend on the specific venue and the food selections.
I hate standing in lines...
you can't always make it so the whole table is eating at the same time, so it's annoying when everyone at your table is done eating and you are just sitting down, especially since I'm a slow eater.
The elderly people might need help with their plates.
There is a big chance of dropped plates... and all sorts of messy mishaps.
I also have the problem where I like my food hot and by the time I sit down, the food I first put on my plate is always cold by that time.
Having said that, I love buffets... but not at functions like weddings. Family style might be a better alternative to cut costs.
You know your guests best and good luck with your decision.
I love the choices that are available at buffets, the creativity, there is more food available (quantity), guests can eat their fill (seconds, thirds, etc), choose what they want or don't want, a little of everything, etc. We will have staff available to help those who need it. To me it's a no-brainer, a buffet is the only way to go. I've found good reasons to be unhappy with all weddings I've been to that have plated meals, but not with buffets.
I had a plated dinner, but that was largely for cost reasons ($10 less for plated). I think we would have rather had a buffet.
Another factor might be space. Will having a big buffet table make the room too crowded?
We had stations at our wedding and everyone loved the variety and the ability to go back up for more. We had a carving station with prime rib, turkey, and pork loin, a tuscan station, a pasta station, and a summer grille station. It definitely didn't look cheap and there were no issues with people waiting in lines. It was presented beautifully and the food was delish.

</div><div>You don't have a long line if you do it table by table and you have it so that guests can go both sides of the table. That way everyone at each table gets their food at the same time, and you just swap it for dessert so that the last people to get their main meal are the first table to get dessert. That keeps everyone happy.
