NEY Mommies

Did anyone start taking prenatal vitamins before TTC?  My doctor suggested I start taking them now even though we don't plan on TTC for another 2ish years.  Mr. Google has given a lot of mixed reviews.

Re: NEY Mommies

  • I've been taking prenatals for about a year. My dr. said there is nothing wrong with taking them before you TTC and there are benefits to having started the prenatals before you get pregnant. Two years out might be a long time, but I don't think anything negative can come from it. The one thing I did change was I stopped taking my multi-vitamin, and I only take one Calcium pill a day rather than two. Something about the Calcium blocking one of the PNV ingredients... iron?

    Still here and still fabulous!

  • Did your doctor say why you should start taking them now?  I guess I don't see the need.  Take a multivitamin, sure, but most of the ingredients that distinguish prenatal vitamins are things you only need during actual pregnancy...  right?

Tiger - I think if you take a Vitamin C supplement that helps the absorption of the iron.  :)

My doctor recommended them because of the iron and B vitamins, thinking it would help out with some of the post-surgery fatigue that I'm still feeling.

ETA: Elle, I was wondering the same thing...why not just take a regular vitamin for now?  I'll ask more questions at my next post-op appointment.

  • I never TTC since mine wasn't planned, but I've heard this a lot. It helps with actually getting pregnant. The folic acid is essential.
  • A lot of docs actually suggest all women of childbearing age take prenatals for the folic acid.  Not having enough folic acid can cause neural tube deffects, and you need to have your levels up to prevent this before pregnancy or a first ob pregnancy visit.  By then it would be too late as a baby's neural tube usually closes before a woman finds out she's pregnant.

It has a lot to do with how many babies are unplanned these days, and docs will recommend to try and catch some of that gap.  This is why years ago they started adding folic acid to things like bread.  It still hasn't fixed all the problems.  There usually isn't large difference in a prenatal and a women's once a day except in the folic acid, b vitamins, and iron.  Some of them also add DHA and EPA for added benefit.

Hope you start feeling better soon!

  • Thank you!  I feel great other than still being tired.  My exercise is still a little limited so I feel pretty sluggish.  One of these days!!  haha

  • Interesting... I bought some prenantal vitamins instead of a multivitamin for women a few months back. I stopped taking them after a few weeks because I read that they were not "good" for women if you weren't carrying bebes inside of you. So I was like "poo. I just wasted $9 or whatever that bottle of vitatmins cost." I have a physical in a couple weeks and planned on asking about such things.

<div>Elle - suzie said it better than I would have. Basically it's good to get the folic acid levels up before TTC if possible. And those days are coming sooner rather than later for Mr. and Mrs. Tiger. :)</div><div>
</div><div>JenJen - I've never heard that you SHOULDN'T take PNV. I'd be interested to hear what your dr. says. My annual isn't for another three months.</div>

  • I have no intentions of TTC anytime soon and I take the pre-natal vitamins. When i compared them against regular women's vitamins there's wasn't much of a difference and I figured more ingredients or whatever the better. Also, they have super yummy gummy ones covered in sugar...that was really my deciding factor compared to regular ones haha.

  • Tiger- I just read that on the interwebz. Not always the best source, but I didn't question it cause I just picked the prenantal ones cause I was being impulsive.
  • I was told to take them for anemia. It also helps with your hair and nails :)

I am a doctor, and I agree with this message :-).
But if you're going to take a prenatal vitamin, make sure you tell your doctor before taking anything on top of that.
  • I take a multivitamin for the B12 and iron then take folic acid as well. One of my meds depletes folic acid, so I work to make up for the deficit. My cousin's first baby was anencephalic, and that scared the sweet bejeezus out of me and I started taking folic acid immediately just as a precaution.

I lied! I just remembered that I picked them cause my hair has been super sucky this last year or so. I thought it might help make it healthier. Gosh what a long year it has been. I completely forgot about that.

I'll have to talk to my ob/gyn about this, because I'm very anemic after AF visits.  I went to go donate blood and they wouldn't let me because I was so anemic after AF.

I was thinking about this today, and I remembered my ob/gyn told me at my last annual there was nothing wrong with pumping up folic acid for child bearing women.  I just never got around to picking up any because I have the Mirena, but it couldn't hurt to take it on top of my multi vitamin and B12's

And whoever posted about gummy vitamins--I love gummy vitamins!
