Question about thank you cards.

A gift post on the E board made me think of this. I would post this question there, but I didn't want to sound like an idiot, and they can be a little scary. Embarassed

If someone only gets you a card and writes in it (not that there is anything wrong with it) do you send them a thank you card for the card? What about for birthdays and Christmas and such? Usually I just call and thank them for the card (birthdays), but one time I sent FI's grandparents a thank you for their card, since I knew they were big on stuff like that and I knew they would appreciate it. FI made fun of me for it.

When I did thank you cards for my grad party 2 years ago I don't think we did for just a card. I don't know what I'll do for the wedding *listening in*
  • I would.  I'd keep it focused on their presence at your wedding.

My FI's family is big on getting thank you cards as well. I make sure to send them one when ever they send me a card or gift. As for the wedding, if anything I would thank them for being a part of your day and for attending.

  • That is what I thought for the wedding.

What do you do for Christmas and your birthday?

  • I send a thank you card for everything. My mom drilled it in my head ever since I was little.

For birthdays or Christmas I tend to just call and say thank you for the card. I kinda view it as a less formal occasion. However, if I hadn't sent that person a Christmas card I will send them one.

  • For the wedding, I plan on sending a TY card to anyone who sends us a card, focusing on thanking them for attending (or if they were unable to attend, mentioning they will be missed).

However for Christmas, birthdays, etc I usually just thank them verbally, in person or over the phone. But I was a bad child that never sent thank you notes for Christmas or birthday presents either.

Exactly what I was going to say! A wedding is a bigger/more important/formal occasion and it's nice to go a little above and beyond since your guests did to attend.

This is what I did too.  If someone just does a card for the wedding I'd still send a thank you saying thanks for coming, blah blah blah, and mention the card as well somewhere in there so they know you got it.
