Just Engaged and Proposals

Wedding Costs

I just got engaged over the Thanksgiving holiday so I am just in the beginning stages of planning. I have no idea what to expect price wise and was wondering if any of you ladies could give some number to better prepare myself for what's up ahead. Thank you!

Re: Wedding Costs

  • I think it's going to depend a lot.  Where are you getting married at?  I live in the DC area too, and this location can be pretty pricy. However, I got married in my hometown in WV, and it was a lot cheaper.  It's also going to depend on what your budget is, who is paying for it,  and what everyone expects out of the wedding day.  You can spend a couple of thousand, or tens of thousands.  It's just going to depend on what you want.
  • Oh and Congratulations on the engagement!!!  Planning your wedding can be so much fun!!!
  • PP is definitely right. I've heard of people paying all different amounts depending on the area they are having the wedding, and what they are looking for in a wedding. My FI and I, for example, are getting away with about $6000 all said and done for about 100 people on the coast in California. My buddy's wedding for about the same amount of people and in the same area turned out to be about $20,000.

Sit down with your FI and brainstorm what exactly you are looking for in a wedding. Do you want something small, just friends and close family? Or would you rather invite everyone you two know? Where are you going to be having the wedding? What's important to you? For me it was photography. I knew this was one thing that I was going to be able to look back on and I wanted it to be amazing.

After you figure some of the basic details out I would recommend starting by making some calls. Your venues, photographer and catering (from what I've experienced) are some of your biggest costs. I know florists can get up there for some people too. This should give you at least a general idea of what you're looking at and what you'll need to save up.

Anywho, congrats on the engagement, good luck on your planning and OH! Check out your local board here on the knot once you figure out where you want to have the wedding. The girls there should be able to give you some ideas too!

  • Thanks! I am planning to get married in VA, either Richmond of Charlottesville. That is where my family is from. I am really excited to start planning, but I don't want to be overwhelmed with the price tag!
  • Congrats! and like PPs said it depends on so many things.  I would think about a)what you would feel comfortable spending b)brainstorm on a guest list, a feel/formality, c)get ballpark figures from vendors in your area and then d)before you make any definite decisions set a firm budget.  I'm spending $11,000 (including honeymoon) with 200 guests and a lot of DIY.

  • I have friends here in Charlottesville who spent $4000 on their wedding and some who spent many, many times that on theirs.

You can honestly find a venue and reception style that fits almost any budget (though small budgets require a little ingenuity!).

I'm always here to answer questions about Charlottesville when you have them.  My FI is a native and knows almost every restaurant, inn, and vineyard in the area.
