Jumping the Broom

Thinking about incorporating this element in the wedding.  Should there be an explanation of the tradition or why we are doing it?  Stated or in the program?
Thx

Re: Jumping the Broom

  • Your officiant could also state "the bride and groom will now be jumping the broom to begin their new life together" or something like that. But if it's something that is unusual to your audience, it wouldn't hurt to put something in the program as well.

  • Thank you Stage, I actually stated this on another post.  This is a Pagan/Welsh (Celtic) tradition that has been adopted in this country for a similar purpose, but different meaning.  So, just make sure you do all the necesssary research to find out ALL the meaning and tradition behind it before deciding to do it--and as Stage has said, you'll want to make sure that it's allowed.

Stage, that's exactly my last post in that thread (that I sort of jacked, oh well) about breaking the glass.  Some woman wrote here, when I told her of the ACTUAL origin of this tradition "are you arguing with me?"    It was all I could do to not respond, no, I'm TELLING you, you ignorant cow, what the truth is.  ARGH.

Edited to add:  Also, I see jumping the broom at many handfastings, but recently I've seen them jump the cauldron, to distinguish it from other cultures that have, IMO, changed the meaning.  These traditions that Christians are adopting and calling their own are starting to get tiresome.  From the colors of Christmas (originally solctice) of red and green to represent the god and goddess, to Easter, etc.

  • Thank you all for the input.  Will do more research on it and post some thoughts soon.  Definitely need to find out if this is allowed.
  • My stars, Stage.  My favorite is here in the bible belt, there's a billboard that goes up every December that says "Jesus is the reaason for he Season."  Really? uh, no, it was originally a Pagan celebration.  You newfangled Christians just adopted it because you saw how much fun we were having.  LOL!

  • I've heard these kinds of things are supposed to be explained in the program in case there are people attending who are unfamiliar with the tradition.

  • Programs are unnecessary, just an "add on" IMO.   And although many people think that they know the origin of a tradition, this entire thread points to the fact that many do not.  So, It is possible that people put the wrong explanation in their programs, and the misinformation continues.

  • Just an FYI- different cultures have different meanings for jumping the broom. Jumping the broom for black people didn't start in America, it was actually a part of some of the traditions in Africa way before slavery. Through the slave trade much of African history and traditions were lost so we only have bits and pieces of things to go off of.

I have a German friend and she told me the reason Germans did it was because they wanted to make sure the bride wasn't a witch. Funny I know... but just because it has a certain meaning in one culture does not mean it's the same for others.
