RSVP and $$

I got my first RSVP in the mail with a check in it and a note saying they could not be there.  I know with regular gifts your supposed to open-send a thank you-but not use them....but with a check...Do I deposit it?  Cash it and not use it?  Or go shoe shopping?

Obviously the last part was a joke.  Unless it is ok to do that...

Re: RSVP and $$

  • Cash and don't use (or at least keep track so that if something happened and you need to return all gifts you have the money to do so) and write the thank you ASAP.
  • Ditto PPs. I kept an excel sheet with our guests names and info. One column was for gifts and another I checked off when the TY was sent. So, log the amount in some way so you remember it, then deposit the check and get a TY out right away.

<div>Is this why you aren't supposed to use any of your wedding gifts before the wedding and sending out thank you cards???  </div>

I was wondering the same thing!

Thanks ladies, heading to the bank and Post office first thing.

  • Ditto PPs, either cash or deposit it now and send a TY note immediately.  Most people don't want an uncleared check hanging out in their account for a while, it can make balancing your checkbook a headache.

Yup. That way, if the wedding is called off, you can return the gifts and cash right away. It's always a good idea to send a thank you card immediately, though.
  • Same thing happened to me. I cashed the check into a special account in my bank that is not linked to my own savings or checking accounts. This way we can keep track of all the money we received for the wedding and use it for things that we need or want as a married couple.
