Wedding Dress Question!!! Please Answer!

I am not currently engaged, although I have talked about it with my boyfriend. Since we are poor college students, he wants to save up for a nice engagement ring before he pops the question. The problem is that I've found my dream wedding dress this season (Liz Fields 9104). How long are dresses typically available? Will I be able to find it a year, or possibly two years, down the road? It's not a very expensive dress... should I look into buying it before I get the ring? AHHH!!! Help!

DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE BUY A DRESS BEFORE YOU ARE ENGAGED!!

If you can't find it when you are engaged then you will find another I promise. Do not plan a wedding, buy things for a wedding, or do any other wedding related things before you are engaged. The whole point of an engagement is for you to plan the wedding during that time. So when you are engaged then you can buy a dress.

Step away from the dress.

I'm assuming you haven't actually tried on the dress, so you may very well hate how it looks in person and on you. There will be other dresses if this one gets discontinued before you're engaged, however, there will not be other chances to enjoy dressing shopping while engaged. Don't cheat yourself.

Don't buy a dress for a wedding that isn't happening. It's like buying a (very expensive) printer when you don't have a computer.

This reminds me of the Say Yes to the Dress episode where a woman goes into Kleinfeld's and buys a wedding dress before she's even engaged. She ends up getting engaged about a week or so later, but I can't help but wonder how awkward that conversation was.

"Oh, honey, of course I'll marry you! I'm so happy! Plus, I already bought my wedding dress so we're well on our way with planning!"

"I'm so happy you said ye--wait, what?"

Seriously, don't buy a wedding dress before you're engaged. Besides, you mention how you're wondering if the dress will be available one or two years down the line so I'm assuming that's your timeline for getting engaged. Honestly, buying a dress THAT far in advance, whether you're engaged or not, is typically not a good idea. Tastes and styles change. Two years down the road, you may not even care for this dress.

So take a deep breath, relax, and enjoy your life and your boyfriend before the planning (and engagement.)

Don't buy a dress before you are engaged - tastes change and new styles come out all the time. You may find that this dress you love right now isn't your style a year from now. You may also find that it doesn't look as good on you as it does on the model. Don't rob yourself of the experience of shopping for a dress and trying things on. When I was dress shopping I was so sure that I wanted a certain dress but when it came to try it on it made me look kind of frumpy and I was eh about it. But when I tried on my dress there was no doubt in my mind about it - it was perfect for me.

Just take a giant step back away from looking at dresses and planning a wedding and simply enjoy your relationship as it is now. This time you have now is special and you can never get it back - don't waste it by looking too far ahead. There will be plenty of time to stress and worry about how you'll make the wedding special to you and your BF later - don't borrow trouble.

Don't buy the dress. You don't need to even shop for dresses until after you're engaged, and even then a year before your wedding at the very earliest. If you buy too early, you run the risk of buyer's remorse- with every new season comes new dresses, and many brides have been known to regret buying so early when they see something they like better.

You also may hate the dress when you try it on- the wedding dresses I thought I would love didn't look quite right on me. It was the plain-looking one on the hanger that really rocked my figure. You just never know until you try them on- and if you're trying on dresses before you're engaged- shame on you!

Buying your wedding gown is such a big part of wedding planning. Let yourself enjoy that time when it comes. Engagements, even long ones, will fly by so quickly. Just be patient.

Don't be crazy. That is like buying your senior prom dress as a freshman or a couch for a house you don't own. It is just a dress and there are likely to be others similar to it or it will be completely out of style. Further, just because you like it online doesn't mean you will like it on you.

Buying a wedding dress before you are engaged is like buying baby clothes when you are not expecting. It's just crazy. Styles change, tastes change, budget change and there is actually know guarantee that he will propose until it actually happens. DO NOT BUY A WEDDING DRESS.

Do NOT do NOT buy the dress! As PP have stated, your tastes will change, you will change, and you are not engaged. Dress shopping is a very special experience that you do not want to rob yourself of once you are engaged. I saw a picture of an old coworker on facebook in her wedding dress and was 100% sure that was the dress for me. My now FI proposed about 7 months later and the dress I purchased looks nothing like the one I wanted.
