NWR: Detroit Half Marathon

Sooo every couple of years, I get really into running and run a bunch of races - in 2009 I even ran the Chicago 1/2 Marathon in September.

Well, I'm now really getting back into running and I've already done a few races, not to mention I'm running 3-4x/week.  I think I would like to sign up for the Detroit 1/2 Marathon, but it is 3 weeks before my wedding.  I'm not sure if I would be too stressed out to keep up on my training during that time!

Has anyone ever ran the Detroit half or full?  Was it fun?  If I know it's going to be awesome I think I can do it, but if it's just mediocre, I will probably pass.

Thoughts?

Re: NWR: Detroit Half Marathon

  • I definitely haven't run the marathon, but I've watched. I know lots of people really like the half in Detroit because you get to run over the bridge and through the tunnel. This year, they also have a half option that stays in the US, too.

As for the full, I know people who have done that too. I think the spectators die out in the second half of the race, so if that's the kind of thing that keeps you going, it might not be the best option.

Way more people run the half than the full in Detroit. There's also a relay, for those of us who don't run as far. I'm doing that this year!

  • I ran the half in 2009! I love it because the atmosphere of Detroit is completely taken over with all the positive energy!! It's also kind of cool to run over the bridge and through the tunnel. I say go for it!!!!
  • I have done the half and the full.  It's a great course, relatively flat, perfect for a PR.  They keep it fun and there's a ton of energy out there from all the spectators.  They have local bands every so many miles.  I highly recommend it!

My FI and I are opening our triathlon season this year with a race two weeks before our wedding (the race is in two weeks, our wedding in four).  So far we're really happy we planned it this way.  Training is a good way to clear the brain when it's on wedding overload!
  • I did the half 3.5 weeks before my wedding last year and it didn't affect anything. Running is a great stress reliever. I wasn't able to train as much as I wanted to because I was busy with wedding planning but I thought 3.5 weeks was plenty of time in case I had an injury (which I didn't). You'll do great! Good luck!

  • Thanks everyone!  I think I'm going to do it!  I know I won't be able to train as much as I would like during the summer since it is so FREAKIN hot out, but I know I can be ready by Oct. 21 :)

  • It is definitely on my list of "to do" races because of the international component.  I travel for work (heavily, in the fall) so it might have to wait until I switch roles, but I absolutely would do it.  I don't think you'll be as stressed as you think you'll be, and for me at least, running is a great destressor.  Depending on how fast you are, it's only a few hours out of your weekend, ya know? :)
  • I've done it twice before and loved it! I personally don't see a problem with it being so close to the wedding, especially if you are just doing it for fun. I did the Philly half this past fall when I started grad school and had almost no free time to train. The rush of the adrenaline keeps you going, and if not, there is no shame in walking! Also, I've only done the two, but the Detroit half beat Philly in my book, the sunrise while running over the bridge is amazing!
  • I'm doing it this year!!

  • I've never done the Detroit but I have done others and I would say go for it!  It would be something great for you and FI to blow off some steam before the wedding, bond a little bit more and enjoy the atmosphere.  Worst case scenario you are sore but that won't last two weeks.
