Anyone Scrapbook?

Hey all, I just got back from my honeymoon and was thinking that with all the pictures, ticket stubs, and other memorabilia I collected along the trip I would try to make a scrapbook.  I am not a very artistic person at all, and have never scrapbooked before.  Dose anyone have any advice or useful tools for someone getting started?  I want this to be a wonderful keepsake me and my DH will have forever and not something that looks like a kid's collage.

I also XP this on the Nest Craft forum, but as it doesnt' seem very active, thought I would also post here.

Re: Anyone Scrapbook?

  • First, congrats!  Hope you had fun on your honeymoon!!

Now, I love scrapbooking!  I have accumulated so many materials over the years that I'm not sure where to tell you to start.  I usually get supplies from Hobby Lobby or Michaels for cheaper things.  For tools and scrapbooks, I sometimes place orders through a Creative Memories consultant (they have a website where you can place orders too).

If you are feeling brave, you could start from scratch and try to put together a scrapbook, but since you are new, here is another option.  I know that Creative Memories sells these "Quick Albums" that come with most of the supplies you need as far as a scrapbook, paper, pages and some embellishments.  Here is a link to the wedding quick album:

    http://www.creativememories.com/Content/Shop/Product.aspx?pr=InspectOffering&s=647914&dpr=BrowseCategory&ds=/Hierarchy/Paper%20Scrapbooking/Photo%20Albums/Quick%20Albums

You can't really do a theme with it, that would be a downfall.  It is just a general wedding theme.

They also have this project center:

    http://projectcenter.creativememories.com/photos/love_and_wedding_project_/

It has templates/ideas for how to set up scrapbook pages (you can probably also google this and find some from other websites).  If you get some inspiration on how to set up your pages, maybe that will help you decide what kind of tools, paper, and embellishments you are interested in.

Let me know if you have any further questions!  I love scrapbooking and will be happy to help you!

  • I've made a few scrapbooks, each one looks a little better than the last. It's not that hard to make one from scratch. I suggest first buying a book with the plastic pages in it. Pick out a ton of cute scrapbook paper you like. In the same aisle as the scrapbook paper there's card stock which I find nice to stick to my photos before double sided taping them to the page. I basically just use scotch double sided tape, stick the photo to the card stock, then cut the card stock around the edge of the photo. There's even scissors with little designs you can cut the paper with so you can have a scalloped or lacy edge or whatever you want. You can arrange 23 4x6 pics to a page with this border. If you did anything special on your honeymoon like an excursion maybe take all the photos from that one activity and make a page or two out of it. Or you can just scramble up all of the photos and place them throughout the book randomly. An easy way to jazz up photos is by using the stickers in the scrapbook aisle, be careful though because these add up QUICK. Scrap booming isn't cheap when you find yourself buying everything you want all at once. Clearance bins always have a ton of stamps and ink pads and ribbon you can use. The stickers at michaels always to 40 percent off every few weeks. These are just tips to start a basic homemade scrapbook but the more you do the more you'll come up with, like putting ribbons in there or making a collage of photos or coming up with a creative border around the photos. I personally don't like the idea of a premade scrapbook because it takes away the sentimental value for me. It's easy enough to attach your photos to scrapbook paper and slap some stickers on there . Good luck!! And you can always go to the Internet for some creative advice

LOL, thanks for the clarification, I was wondering how big these pages are.

  • Glad to hear that some others have had positive experiences scrapbooking.  Since DH and I did a road trip of Ireland for our honeymoon I was hoping to have a page or two devoted to each town/major excursion that we had on our trip.  I have hundreds of pics, ticket stubs, visitor brocures, postcards, etc.

  • Another tip, I just thought of.  I don't usually do this for regular scrapbooks, but it is nice for wedding, baby, or trip scrapbooks.  You can get little journaling cards, or just use card stock cut into whatever shape and size you want, and include that on the page with pictures, then you can write something about the trip, or a special memory, or just some details you would like to remember when you look back at the scrapbook.  I always think these are a nice touch!

    This!

I am NOT a scrapbook-er in any way, shape, or form. My Mother and sisters are - and try hard to convert me, but I am just not good at those things (and hate that, I would LOVE a decently scrapbooked wedding album). The journaling cards strike me the most when I look through Mother's books - they are the link to explain memories or give more to the story (I know, I know, 1.000 words and all but sometimes a little more is nice!). It really adds to those memories, both for her and for those of us enjoying what she has put together.

  • I scrapbook and in my line of work deal with preserving scrapbooks and the absolute most important thing to not cheap out on is proper archival quality adhesives. You don't want to put all this work in and on your 10 year anniversary open it up and have yellowing tape, pictures falling out or disintegrating from cheap glues. I'd also recommed starting off with a good book, the fabric or leather box type ones hold up better than the ones that are more like binders with plasticy covers.

Also, if you don't plan to make this a regular hobby, buy a little at a time. It's so easy to go nuts with all the cute stuff and then you have a box full of expensive craft supplies. I went on one buying spree when there was a going out of business sale 4 years ago and am still trying to use stuff up.

  • I always use stencils or a paper cutter, because I can't cut in a straight line to save my life. I started with Creative Memories, but now I buy stuff at a local store, or Michael's if we are in the area (nearest town is 100 miles away).

That being said...my daughter is 6 y.o. in her scrapbook and 18 y.o. IRL. So I'm a scrapbooking failure.
  • I love scrapbooking.  I am in the middle of doing a wedding scrapbook and we've been married for eighteen years!  I'm so glad my mother is a wedding packrat.  Because of her, I have an extra invitation, program, & newspaper engagement & wedding announcements for my scrapbook!

I always use a Creative Memories scrapbook, pages, & page protectors.  I use papers & stickers from anywhere as long as they are acid & lignon free.  I love Hobby Lobby & Michael's.  AC Moore has cute things too.  I would buy a cutter, but don't worry about having lots of different scissors, punches, and things like that.  I think sometimes simple is better.
  • My mom and I are both scrapbookers and I love looking back at my scrapbooks.  My sisters are not into it but want to preserve memories.  One of them LOVES the smash products available at Target and Archiver's.  She says they make it super easy to say stuff like ticket stubs without the committment of a full scrapbook.

  • Thanks for all the advice.  I think my next day off from work I will take a trip to Michael's and look around and see if I get any ideas.

  • I love to scrapbook too!  I only use Creative Memories pages, albums and adhesives but I'll use other stickers, paper and stuff from other locations (Michaels, Hobby Lobby, local scrapbook stores).  While I highly recommend doing it I realize it's not everyone's cup of tea.  Creative Memories also offers digital scrapbooks in addition to their albums that have sleeves for the pictures instead of the traditional scrapbook setup and I know a lot of people who really enjoy doing the digital scrapbooks.  What I've heard is that they're really great for people who don't like the "artsy" part of scrapbooking.
