Photography- how does it all go down on the big day?

I'm seeing alot of photographers that seem to have a romantic portrait session of the bride and groom on their big day at sunset/in a field, etc. Are those shot on the actual day of the wedding? Do some photographers photograph those shots the day before?

I'm wondering what the role of the bride/groom will be (host/hostess?) and if it's polite to run off to a totally different location for photos, leaving the guests at the ceremony/reception hall (mine will be at the same venue).

Your guests will expect that you will leave to have some wedding pictures taken... it's not considered rude at all.  What's rude is if you leave them with nothing to do/eat/drink during that time.  That's what the cocktail hour is for... your guests are entertained while you're away.  Photos taken at dusk/sunset are gorgeous!  In order to do this you'll need to time your day properly so that your ceremony ends just before the sun starts to set.   Talk to your photographer to plan this out :)

An "after" session, the day after or anytime after is a great addition to your wedding coverage. That way you don't have to worry about being anywhere else. You're more relaxing, and it can be alot of fun!

    Here is our typical timeline:

1-2 hours prior to ceremony - prep photos  and possibly attendant photos
    Ceremony - obvious
After receiving line - family photos
prior to cocktail hour - Full wedding party photos
cocktail hour - private shooting with couple
reception - candids until sunset and then, barring any major interuption, we steal the couple for a few sunset shots (normally no longer than 20 minutes)

We also do day after shots if the couples choose it!
