Premature mail forwarding?

Hello everyone, I don't believe I've ever posted on here but Hi :-)

So I went to my mailbox today, hoping to grab some RSVPs because they're due in on Saturday.  Well, much to my chagrin I found a red paper that said "Mailbox Vacant, DO NOT LEAVE MAIL HERE," which is a reminder to the mailman not to put any mail in there.

Well, I ran into the apartment office and asked the manager about it, explaining to her that I registered for mail forwarding online to being on April 1st and she said she would talk to the mailman. 

I was a little unsure that she would actually remember so I called the Post Office just to see what they thought about it.  The man that answered the phone said to leave a sticky note for the mailman on the red paper.  Well, I did so hopefully this will be resolved?  In the meantime, does anyone know what might happen to the mail I missed today?  :-/

    This happened to me last year when I asked for mail forwarding to be begin on a certain day.  For some reason they started trying to forward the next day.  My mail was basically stuck at the post office because the new address wouldn't accept it yet.  After several phone calls I eventually got my mail delivered to the current address within the next few days
